I haven't as yet covered the large locknut that holds the ball joint onto the upper wishbone. The rack lock nut I had some PVC sleeves but the top ball joint is an odd shape... Have people passed without it covered or does it have to be covered in which case what is the normal approach so that the tester thinks its permanent?

I went along to watch an IVA at the Nottingham test centre earlier this week and this specific issue came up. Basically, if it can be touched by the radius sphere then it needs to be covered. The tester said that he would be looking for something that looks as though it should be there as opposed to something that would be taken off and thrown away. e.g. He said that cable tied split tube would not pass and recommended the use of PVC sleeves (cable glands) for the lock nut. The issue is not with the cable ties themselves, which he said were acceptable, but rather whether the bit that they are holding in place could then be taken right off and thrown away.

However, the steel outer shells of many makes of ball joint themselves have edges that do not pass and are much more difficult to cover. I was planning on using those round rubber gaiters that seal the backs of the round multi-pin electrical connectors that you get in BMW's (sorry, I don't have a picture)

I passed SVA by stretching some cycle inner tube over the lock nut and start of the ball joint.

Hmmm my kids are 25 and 22 .... Not sure i can make much out of a vodka bottle, a durex!

Use a cable gland shroud as you have for the rack, I got a kit from kit spares for £8 for a set of all 4

I used a couple of ball joint boots back-to-back
