baz-R - 18/3/12 at 10:36 PM

i have a pre 93 zetec engine from a known car with all the details known with ford proof of age letter but there was no engine no. where it should be on the block
and i have cleaned it and done all the tricks.
odd thing is the build code is there (rdb)

did ford not code replacment blocks? i cant find any info on this anywhere
could i just stamp the code in or is mr iva going to smell a rat
it does have all the phase 1 zetec bits fitted.

There was no code on new blocks. The dealer was meant to stamp the old number on the new block. With time being money most never bothered. The punter wasnt ever going to know.

You can stamp it your self but if they dont feel its genuine at iva you will have the same problem.

Silvertops where stamped with 7~8mm digits

I had a garage fitted replacement engine in my VW camper many years ago. It came without an engine number and the garage stamped the number from my old scrap engine on the block.

I have a similar issue, what way upis the standar ford engine number ?? bottom to top or top to bottom- if you catch my drift

Mind you, im looking near the flywheel, would it be stamped anywhere else on a silvertop ?? or is ther any other distuingishing markings ??

Sorry about the spelling, my keyboards playing up !

top to bottom like this on early zetecs
A
B
1
2
3
4
5
X
Y
Z

with normal stamps

later ones where dot matrix type

a splash of vinegar for a few weeks on the number will give it that "aged" look..

I stamped mine, no problems at the DVLA inspection.

some of the reconditioned engine numbers I've come across, including my landys look like they have been done by a drunk monkey, don't think they have to be stamped to any standard

If they were to be blanks & stamped up by the dealer doing the replacement, they COULD have been done any old how ... or not at all!
