Making a VIN plate
Matthew_1 - 19/3/04 at 11:14 AM

Out of intereste how have people made up VIN plates? Is there any particular design that should be followed? I assume a flat piece of ali with the relevant info stamped on is ok ?

Yep, we've made one. Flat piece of Ali, 17 digits alpha/numeric. Whatever you want as long as no-one else has the same VIN number

Got mine in three days from local DVLA office - then stamped onto an ali plate, then rivetted on.

I did as hellfire, a bit of ali and about 10 atempts to stamp 17 digits in a STRAIGHT line, Not as easy as I first thought but got there in the end, then just rivetted on.

DVLA stipulate on VIN issue form that if alu VIN plate is rivetted on, stamping steel chassis in separate location is required. This is inline with current production vehicles. Many vehicles now have the VIN clearly visible at the very bottom of the windscreen for checking by polis etc.

Having said that, DVLA Local Office Edinburgh don't physically inspect the car as they assume SVA inspectors have checked for presence of VIN.

I have pop rivetted alu plate and also intend to weld on thin steel plate vin to chassis member at the front. Just to be on the safe side with Inspector Chump.

Cheers

A couple of years ago I floated the idea on the Yahho of getting a batch of proper chassis number plates made but nobody supported the idea..

For work I have had batches of plant ID plates made by screen printers they aren't that expensive and look really cool.

Any idea what sort of money they'd be?

I once reshelled a MGB and a TR6 using heritage shells (the MG one was OK, but the TR6 was diabolical quality), and one of the finishing touches was new shiney chassis plates, there is a company which specialises in them. I think they were about £15 each, but the company must have made the blanks up in bulk

They used to advertise in Exchange and Mart but I haven't bought one for ages. I think they used to put one in Autotrader as well.

Old thread, but I welded mine on today, the guy from the LVLA will inspect it on wednesday, I think he is going to give me an age related plate before the SVA Rescued attachment ChassisPlate.JPG
