Steering column lining up all wrong

I have just finished fitting the scuttle panel and put the steering column in to line up the brake pipe feeds from the brake reservior. I noticed that the steering column is sitting really deeply into the scuttle, to the extent that the indicator stalks will be behind the dash panel which cant be right. Have I missed a trick somewhere?

Have you double checked the position of the nose cone bonnet and scuttle to make sure the scuttle is in the right place.

can only compare to my Viento but the face of the scuttle looks very close to the brackets.

Spacers look brilliant, thanks for the idea. Was 1" enough distance to bring it out by?
