Driveshaft fitting (Multiple choice!)
RichB - 11/6/07 at 09:30 PM

Hi all, I hope you can help.

I am fitting my sierra push-in driveshafts, on my velocity, and they are fouling on the rear uprights (drum brakes). Is the large hole in the upright supposed to be big enough for them to fit through? Mine isn't!

I don't know whether this is because I have too many spacer washers between the upright and the brake back plate. The various lumps and bumps on the back of the back plate mean that I have to use 6 washers.

Should I
a) Make the upright hole bigger?
b) Grind off the lumps of the backplate?
c) Fit the hub on the other side of the bp (ie between the bp and the upright)?
d) do something else?!

Cheers for any help. I could add a photo if it helps.

Rich

not familiar with the Velocity, but something doesn't sound right to me. The drum brake backplate should sit flat against the upright and then the whole driveshaft assembly should slide through the backplate and upright so that the hub sits flush against the backplate. The hub is then bolted to the upright, trapping the backplate inbetween. You certainly shouldn't need washers in there.

Just a thought, but have you got the right uprights? Uprights for a disc braked rear end will be different to accommodate the caliper and not the drum backplate.

Any photos you can post?

Photo(s) would help. Cheers.

pics will make the problem clear..

I'll take some photos tonight but just done a quick diagram. The red circle indicate where the driveshaft fouls on the upright.

They are definitely the right uprights for drum brake although they look like they might be made for a smaller backplate. I queried Luego on this and they said they only make one type of drum upright so it must be right!

The build manual says to use a max of 8mm spacer washers in between the backplate and the upright. But this dosen't give me enough clearance. Do I have a wierd backplate?

Anyway I'll post some photos later for you to get a clearer idea of what's going on.

Cheers

It would help if I actually uploaded the diagram! Rescued attachment rear hub.jpg

The photo in the luego build manual explains the spacers but shows the drive shaft passing clean through the upright Rescued attachment image010.jpg

mhhh

i was in the biggest scrapy of spain..

last week and i founded out that after 94 the escort driveshafts are allot bigger then the earlyer models.

maybe you have a to new pushin shaft system.

from wich year is your driveshaft /donor?

Tks

I think it was a '92 (if that was H reg) sierra estate

Is this for a Velocity or a Velocity XT

I seem to remember something about the driveshafts for the original velocity needing Shortening . Some one with a velocity may help with the difference>>

Could be wrong as I have a Viento...

rusty nuts - 12/6/07 at 07:54 PM

The Luego Locost IRS had to have the driveshafts shortened, don't know about the Velocity

RichB - 13/6/07 at 11:15 AM

Nope it's an XT. Here are some photos. Rescued attachment Rear Hub 003.jpg

have you got a pic of the end of the drive shaft to show what type it is..

RichB - 14/6/07 at 11:39 AM

Which end? I've got this one showing the wheel end. I'll take a diff end photo this evening if that's what you mean. Rescued attachment Rear Hub 001.jpg

mhh i would let a laser/plasma cut the plate for you out of 12mm steel. instead of those rings....

then you are done right???
your cuestion is wy 12mm instead of 8mm??

That just doesn't look right to me. I don't think the 4 hub carrier bolts should be put under that much shear force.

Added to that, the washers and holes in the backplate and upright are clearance holes which surely aloows room for the whole assembly to move around?

Other rear uprights I've seen have a ~10mm thick plate welded to the body of the upright which is shaped to fit into the rear of the backplate. The hub carrier bolts then locate in threaded holes in the 10mm plate (as per the original Sierra assembly).

Have you checked with Luego to clarify how they assemble them?
