How much room for an airbox on a Velocity XT ?
Andybarbet - 7/3/11 at 10:57 PM

Im planning on fitting my 1.8 Zetec with GSXR throttle bodies and an airbox.

I was just curious as to how much space i will have in my Velocity XT engine bay to fit an airbox ?

Could someone with a VelocityXT/Silvertop Zetec measure between the head and the chassis rails when they get a minute in the garage with tape measure and bonnet off please ?? Thees no rush at all.

Heres the 2 measurements i need (A & B):
Space for airbox
Space for airbox

I want to get the airbox sorted in the next few weeks and fitted to engine so its all ready to drop in the chassis when the time comes.

Regards Andy

I have ZX9 carbs on my Indy chasis and have to have a cutout in the bonnet for the filters. I am aware that you can buy a slimline pipercross / itg type filter which will sit under the bonnet. My feeling is that insufficient cold air will be drawn in for maximum power

Well as a Velocity owner who's had a Crossflow on twin 40s and a Zetec on bike carbs in there I'd say you don't have much room at all. The front carb is very close to the bonnet no matter what your set up (FI might be different)

I have exactly the measurements you are after with a ruler in photo's Pm me your e-mail address and I will send you some photo's!

A few thoughts:

I originally didn't want a hole in my bonnet and ran a very crude shield on the inlet. As a result it fitted under the bonnet. However I have since decided a hole in the bonnet would be ok, unfortunately on further investigation I have put my bonnet latches in the way and can't move them without leaving holes in the stainless.

I have also done some GT power simulation that indicates I could do with a longer inlet run. I am running gsxr 750 tb's with the shorter trumpets on hose to a pretty short manifold and there is still not much room as you will see from the photo's. If I were to do it again I think I would cut the bonnet.

I have just won on eBay what I believe to be a pipercross px600 airbox, initial measurements say it will be extremely tight IF it fits. When I try it I will let you know!

I have a few other thoughts that I will add to the e-mail as they will make more sense with the pics
