Trial fit XE shows up chassis mods needed - now sorted!
stevegough - 10/5/09 at 09:24 PM

Had a good day today - used my new-found welding 'skills' to fit 3 missing handbrake brackets.

THEN had a go at trial - fitting the engine - lots of clearance issues here - should have gone BEC !

I had an idea my (older) Luego velocity chassis was going to cause some problems after seeing Steve Lovelock's and others at Stoneleigh the other day.

There is a large diagonal chassis tube in the way of the inlet manifold - the velocity XT chassis has 4 small diagonals instead.

There is also going to be an issue with the daft loop put in the brake pipe exactly where the oil pump goes.

Have a look at this photo and also the ones in the 'engine trial fit' file in my photo album, any suggestions, chappies?

I remember reading in a kit car mag a few years ago about a redtop in a velocity, he had to cut out a couple of chassis rails, if anyone has a copy it might be worth a read ?? it was a blue bodied car if that helps ?

fit throttle bodies, should clear it . Sorry for the misadvice i gave you re: the inlet manifold steve, ive not seen the velocity chassis and didnt know about that pesky rail.

Go with individual throttle bodies or carbs

i'd definitely agree on that in any case, however, judging by that photo (almost impossible from a photo, i know ) i think the inlets on the head will sit right where that tube lays, on the same level, and within inches

you'd actually have the exact same problem i've got on my car (completely different chassis though)

Bike carbs will make that much less of a problem.... might be worth investigating that before going much further. Some R1 carbs and a manifold from the grassers suppliers (can't remember the name at the moment - NSDev will know if it doesn't come to me) would be about £200 in total.

THANKS for replies so far, guys -

Craig - you did not give me any misinformation at all! - my chassis isn't a standard velocity one in any case. Your info you have given me these last few weeks has been invaluable!

ANYONE got a photo from the RHS of the engine bay, (XE engine fitted) showing the alignment of inlets / TBs with the chassis rail?

MOST of this problem has to do with the huge bulk of the standard inlet manifold casting.

I've got a picture with bike carbs fitted - but in a Dax! If that's any use to you (might give you dimensions) let me know.

Probably would have been very similar in the DAX, but things have moved on since this morning - I've taken the plunge and removed the offending tubing, cut it in half and shaped the two resulting pieces to go back almost exactly as the current Velocity.

Got an auto dimming welding mask on order, when it comes I'll set about welding them in.

Thanks for assistance and suggestions, guys, much appreciated.

I wa going to suggest that you cut the tubes off and reweld them whilst I was reading the post. Is this what you wanted picture wise?

don't know how I got t that wrong, second try: Rescued attachment DSC02130a.JPG

Hi There Maybe this piccy will help.

stevegough - 12/5/09 at 09:15 PM

Thanks for pics guys, but I was looking for something directly from the side showing TBs clearing the rails maybe something like this sketch.....

stevegough - 12/5/09 at 09:18 PM

Thanks, guys but I was really after something directly from the side - maybe a bit like this sketch.....

Is this a bit nearer the angle your looking for, just found it in my pics Rescued attachment FIL1190-1.jpg

that's clearly showing the clearance - thanks

Not sure if the velocity chassis is taller or not though, i know the bodywork is.

stevegough - 17/5/09 at 12:35 PM

Modification to chassis complete - XE will fit with std injection manifold now - Hopefully - I'll find out on thursday when I try the engine again!

Note to self: must move that daft brake pipe loop first...

Obligatory pics attached....
