I don't post in the midi section very often, but they do interest me (previous X19 owner!)

I found this whilst browsing and it looks an ideal setup for a sierra 4x4 donor (although the chassis looks a little weak!)

Ha anyone tried anything similar?

what would happen if you spun the entire setup round (as in the picture, engine at the back) but then swapped the diffs back to the right way round. do the front and rear diffs go the opposite way to each other?

The key would be to invert them in place. Not impossible by the look of the "front" one, but the one at the back could be trouble as it's likely attached to the engine housing...

I wonder why double spring per corner in the front?

looks remarkably similar to the set up of an rs200.

The springs and dampers look quite short so maybe the doubling up is to allow for this.

Yes, it's one of the Nissan MID-4 prototypes. Another fine example of Nissan getting cold feet with a good design and not releasing it. See this link for some more MID-4 spiel.

As to the layout - it's the same as any of the AWD Lamborghini's including the LM001 off-road behemoth! The LM001 derived from the Cheeta and the Cheeta was designed by some of the people who had designed the XR311 for the American military - see this link for the restoration of one of the XR311 prototypes. And as mentioned above, this is pretty much the same layout as the RS200 and the MG 6R4 (I think).

One day, when I win the lotto and have a bottomless pit of time and money, I'd like to build something closely inspired by the XR311 - just to scare people in traffic

Wow!! I'd never seen that nissan before. Mmmm.

Was wondering what that was. Not sierra backwards; not RS200 as that has the gearbox at the front; very similar to 6R4 and Lancia Delta S4 but subtly different; no fat lambo engine.
