xO RS
Gakes - 14/5/10 at 05:47 PM

I will be making a mid engine car with a clip on roof. The car will have a windscreen, wipers, doors and space to put the roof behind the seats maybe.

I just started with the chassis design recently and the suspension will be based on the xO 500 suspension points.

The chassis will mainly be made of 38mm x 2mm square tubing.

Deadline is in 4-5 weeks. Rescued attachment IMAGE_853.jpg

4-5 weeks for a completed car? or just the design?

do you have any CAD drawings i can have a look at?

good luck though, and on your drawing/painting, i would have put bigger windows/windscreen on it, so its more in proportion

good luck
chris

Complete.

The drawing is just a guide. Will add bigger windows on the cad model

i think that may be VERY optimistic timescale.

But i am on year 10 of my build so I'd ignore my comments on how long things take.

4-5 weeks is easy, provided you have LOTS of money and nothing else to do (ie work or family)!

kb58 - 14/5/10 at 09:48 PM

Drawing is one thing. Dealing with molds and composites, never mind functional doors, is a totally different story!

WTF?

He's just teasing/joking with you all...

Gakes - 15/5/10 at 07:00 AM

Honestly, I have nothing else to do but to build the car. I have all the steel and most of the parts already. I just hope there wont be any delays.

I might have up to 6 weeks, but thats pushing my luck.

I like the drawing but would have thought you would need bigger wheels on the front.

Neville Jones - 15/5/10 at 09:55 AM

How many employees have you got?

Gakes - 15/5/10 at 10:31 AM

Just 1 guy thats in the workshop with me. We can build an xO500 in 4 weeks. This car is much simpler with its square tubing chassis. I might simplify it out with a soft top if I'm pressed for time.

My plan is to build the chassis in week 1, body in weeks 2 & 3, assembly and other things week 4 and finishing in week 5.

Gakes - 14/6/10 at 06:39 AM

Looks like I'm running behind schedule, maybe the 6 week mark can still be made

Gakes - 27/6/10 at 10:40 AM

The client wanted some design changes so the project has had yet another delay. I think it was a good decision as it reminded me too much of an MEV 7(not that its bad, I'm a fan).

This is what we've done so far. to the body. All suspension components are ready, its just bodywork left to do and it looks like the windscreen is going to be a headache to make it fit

So from this week its fibre work and getting the body finished up

What type of material have you used to produce the body form? Does it stretch easily to take out wrinkles?

scootz - 27/6/10 at 06:28 PM

How do you clean the bodywork? Would a 40 degree quick-wash be ok? And is a steam-iron ok for taking out dings?

Gakes - 27/6/10 at 09:51 PM

I'll probably use a hot wash for those nasty stains

lol. The client ran into some cashflow problems so the project is moving on very slowly. We decided to fund it so long till he comes with the rest of the money.

Was hoping it would have gone quicker

I've been updating my own xO500 to the later ones suspension. Gave it a wider rear track. Just assembling it again, will be back on the road in two weeks.

I've also been looking at a Fiat X19, can get one for next to nothing. It drives well but needs some work. What do you guys think of it?

Gakes - 19/8/10 at 08:10 PM

Busy making the body molds this week. Still moving along slowly though. Did some new designs for the full body cover panels as well.

I drove X19's for years before building the Locost, I got fer up of spending more time under the Italian Stallion than in it.

If you could build a new X19, that drove like an X19, that weighed 500kg, and had an engine of 150bhp+, you would be on to a winner.

Gakes - 20/8/10 at 06:43 AM

Been speaking to owners of X19's, they also say its very "delicate". Funny thing is, we ended up laying under the car fixing a linkage

Been thinking of building me an xO RS instead.
