Anything useful on a Mk2 Golf?
I think one of my mates is scrapping his knackered Mk2 golf soon (been sitting in the garden for about 3 yrs). Basically is there anything worth
having off it before it gets squashed?
ISTR some mention of the electric fuel pumps on golfs being useful? I cant remember what models it was in though. If its any good (for a pinto
install) then where is it?
Anything else any good?

IIRC the electric pump was on a Van not the Golf - could be wrong though.
Possibly worth ripping out a bit of wiring and some switches etc, always worth having knocking about - what about the rear view mirror, locking fuel
cap + fuel down pipe (expensive stuff to buy new £1 an inch springs to mind)
cant think of anything else

side repeaters, battery, number plate lights, any rubber edging/trim/surround that might come in handy..
depends how locost you're going really..

Was it the diff off a golf that could be converted into a chain driven diff by adding a sprocket?
I think I remember Rorty mentioning this. Might be worth getting one to play around with to see how practical it is for a mid engine BEC project?

Fuel pump on 8V mk2 and all mk1 is just in front of drivers side rear wheel arch (Audi 80 sport is same one). Bosch unit, about 90quid new, very good
pump. If you dont use it someone else may buy it. The 16V uses a higher power one (in tank??) iirc, maybe not as useful. Be careful running std
carb'd pinto with electric pump. Ive been told that the std one runs fine up to about 150bhp ish.
What about the tailgate stays?? (useful for Robinhood).
Washer bottle and pump. Expansion bottle. Sunroof and sun visors?
If it has a 90spec bodykit, alloys, gti interior, good rust free panels, sports suspension etc take them off as someone will bite your hand off for
them (if price is cheap).

Its just a standard 1.3 8v Golf. (its the model that had the economy thing on it that turns the engine off when you stop)
A lot of the interior etc has been yanked out as it was originally going to be banger raced, but it wont run well enough.
Bodywork was good last time i saw it (remarkable for how long its been standing under a tree!), but may well be shot now.

Would the radiator be small enough for use on 7 style car?, electric fan as well.
A topic a while ago mentioned the hoses had suitable 90degree bends in them.
The steering rack looks like it has potential (non PAS model) with some basic modification needed, steering column could be useable as well.
rear stub axles are attached with 4 bolts. Would probably whant a GTI model with rear disc breaks though or try and use the front discs/calipers.

I will scavenge what I can then. Will have a look at the radiator, but i think it will be too big. The fan will probably be ok though (if its front
mounted?)
I already have a mk2 escort steering rack, and am getting my cortina uprights this weekend. (From the car in the pic as a matter of fact )
Hoses sound like a good idea, as they can be quite expensive.

Just a thought....is the alternator any good to fit on a Pinto in a book chassis, or is it still too big? (as the normal pinto one is too big IIRC)

Make sure you don't bend those cortina uprights in the race!!!! The steering arms are known to get a little misshapen in this type of
motorsport!!

The guy usually sells his uprights to Tiger, so I am sure he knows what to look for to make sure they are still ok. He was going to have a look and
check them the other day, he will only sell them on if they are still usable

Tiger use golf uprights on their Tiger b6 cars. they are quite neat.

Flak,
The Golf has a really low oil filler hole/cap.
I cut out the hole and cap from an abandoned Golf near me and welded it in place of the stupidly tall Pinto one.

Thinking about it- any body got any idea if the dizzys are the same across the MK2 Golf range?
My 1.8lt 200K miler dizzy has got a little sloppy!
