Book chassis, seirra donor?
Gav - 26/7/05 at 08:20 AM

OK ive getting quite happily along with my build and i thought i would never say this but im actually getting quite sick of welding!

right, been offered a reasonable seirra 1.8 as a donor, would this be suitable for the book chassis as far as running gear is concerned, ie i believe the back axle is 2inch longer, what about the front uprights, are these the same size as the escorts, so i can fit them instead without having to make any adjustments to the wishbones?
what about power steering? would this be ok to fit?

right off to google...

I was on the understanding not, twas a factor in me deciding to not do the locost route, hope this helps

OK after a bit of searching it looks like its best not to go with sierria uprights beacuase of the ball joint.

so i can probably find some cortina(same as escort?) uprights, but what about the rest of the car?

The Sierra back end is 4" wider than an Escort. It is also IRS as opposed to a live axle therefore you will need to decide what route you wish to take.
1. Use the Sierra back end with IRS, (you will have to design your own)
2. Use the Sierra back end with a DeDion tube, (all parts available, do a search on DeDion)
3. Source an Escort or Cortinas live axle and continue as per book.

Since this is my first build i think its best to keep it simple and try and source the right parts, then if needed i can change stuff later.

If you possibly can I'd say stick to Escort/Cortina stuff- it'll be quicker in the long run!

I take it the cortina has the same uprights as the escort?
Also is it the same axle? thought i remember someone saying somewhere it was longer?

No, the Escort front uprights are different- they use a McPherson strut system.

The Cortina axle is wider by 4". But quite a few people have fitted these with no problems. They even fill the rear arches better!

If you struggle to find a Cortina axle then a Capri axle is the same and tend to appear more frequently too.

Capri fits really well Rescued attachment Finished rear.jpg
