R1 Starting Props....Kind of!
Hi All,
Turned the key for the first time today... sort of went well but kinda didn't...lol
Here's my problem.
When i start the car it's firing but the starter motor keeps going. I've used the R1 loom with the sierra ignition. Any idea's
where i've gone wrong??? It's a 2000 R1 and loom.
Any help would be great as it's driving me potty

You'll probably need to use a key switch and starter button rather than the sierra ignition setup.
It may be possible to make it work, but IMO it's best to keep as many things the same as the original loom as possible, in case of future
repairs etc.

From memory; In the R1 loom the starter is on a switched earth to activate the starter. The Sierra switch feeds 12v to the starter wire from the
switch feed and goes to earth when released. Which doesn't explain why it starts but would explain why it keeps running.

adithorp is correct that the R1 needs a neg feed to start, you will need to fit a relay between the sierra key switch and the R1 loom. This should
solve your problem.

thanks for the replies guys. How do i go about fitting the relay? from what i can see there's two wire's which are the concern, the blue
white one and the red white one?

From memory again...
Red/white connects to brown/blue for ignition on.
Secondary ignition is also switched on the bike but can be bypassed on a car by connecting blue/black permenently to blue/yellow.
Blue/white connects to earth (momentary) for starter operation.
Think thats right but stand to be corrected.

my head is spinning now.....lol Has anyone got a wiring diagram for the starting system on the R1.... i figure if the starter keeps going i've
wired the cut off relay wrong??? or am i wrong

Without seeing how you've wired it I'm guessing so could be sending you up a blind alley.
I'd disconnect the blue/white wire from whatever you have wired it to. Switch on the ignition and earth the blue/white 'till it starts and
then remove from earth. It should start and run normally. If so the problem is in the way you've switched it.

Here's a quick diagram of the new relay you will need to wire in if you want to keep the starting on the ignition barrel.

A seperate start button is what I have done and suggested in the other thread on this subject in the electrics section, much better IMHO.

It's Alive!
Thanks for all the advice guys. After looking through my loom a spotted a mistake fixed it and boom! she fired. Seems to run like a dream

Na, it's not too bad...lol i had connected the blue white up the blue and white cable from the relay instead of just earthing it. Earthed it
and now it starts on the turn of the key
Yeah felt great! alotof jumping up and down .... lol
