Header and collector pipe length - blade

Anyone know what the consequences would be of fitting my can to the end of the downpipes and mounting it mid car, rather than the norm of having a long collector and mounting the can at the back of the car next to the passenger.

Engine is a carbed 'blade.

Cheers,

Pat...

Hi Pat

I don't think the "1" bit of a 4-2-1 exhaust has much effect on power / torque so apart from the gasses being a bit hotter and possibly blowing out the silencer wadding a bit quicker, I cant see a problem.
If you want "proof", my R1 silencer currently clamps straight into the manifold so the "1" bit is about 6" in total, and that produced the power I was expecting on the RR the other week

Cheers Chris,

Thought no one was going to reply at all then!

Can't decide whether to use the headers I got from you, but with a shorter 2-1 bit, or get some long stainless headers from MK.

Cheers,

Pat...

My understanding of tuned headers is, once you get past the collector, nothing matters if you have a muffler.

OTOH if you do not have a muffler, the "1" length does matter to tuning because the exhaust pulses reflect off the *open* end of the pipe. Once a muffler is added that gain is lost.

Pat:

I'm dealing with a similar situation. Do you have pics or illustrations of what you're considering? I'm having a hard time visualizing.

--Thanks, Chris

Only problem I foresee is if you do have a passenger they will be breathing in the exhaust fumes... as there will nothing to stop the fumes entering the car just past the scuttle. Mounting the silencer could be a problem as the lower chassis doesn't follow the GRP on the Indy in-front of the footwell. Don't know what it's like on a locost though?

My silencer does "sit" across the angled part of the chassis and slightly points outwards rather than parralel to the side chassis rail, but overall it doesnt stick out any further and the outlet pipe is sufficiently far back so as not to trouble passengers (probably about 25cm gap between rear of silencer and front of rear arch.

Ive probably got some pics at home so will upload later.

I'd make sure the headers are the same length as the bike they came from. Mr. Honda knows a thing or two about exhausts.

Chris, can you shed any light on the mild steel headers?

Its not the prettiest with the welded bits to facilitate the slightly expanded primaries, but its a good proven manifold. It was off a Fury that raced in the RGB, several of the RGB guys had them made up together but the chap I bought it from couldnt fit it to his car because his engine was slightly lower in the chassis than the car that the manifold was built on, so it didnt quite fit his.

I don't think it matters where the silencer is located along the side panel. If there's a slight breeze and its blowing in your direction, you're gonna breathe the exhaust fumes.

Just inhale deeply. Aaaahhhhhhh.......

Not worried about the fumes after having a can right under my nose on the Avon.
