Adding an oil cooler to my blade engined car

On track days the poor old thing tends to get overly hot, also the oil is very black since I added a turbo so time for an oil cooler.

The blade engine has a small little oil filter but these are not dissimilar to many modern cars so I took a gamble and purchased a complete oil cooler kit off ebay for an escort, second hand got me a sandwich plate, two hoses and A 13 row oil cooler.

On the engine block you have a water cooler that I have discarded, then with a little welding I was able to modify the sandwich plates bolt to fit:

I cut the metric threads off the blade mounting bolt and welded to the sandwich plates bolt.

I then popped down to halfords and had a shuffle through the filter range and found a champion C138 was a nice small filter with 5/8” UNF threads, just the job.

This also had the advantage that the sandwich plate and filter are shorter than the standard blade setup, I have always struggled to remove my filter due to lack of space in the car

It all bolts up nicely, the kit had right angle bends on the cooler hoses so I had to cut and weld straight, this also pushed things out a bit from the block so a bonus as no clearance issues

Last thing left was to mount to oil cooler and plumb in:

This works on my car as the rad is behind the front wheels, so longer hoses woukd be required if you wanted to mount out front as is more usual.

Hoping my over heating issues are now sorted, roll on then next local track day

You might want to consider fitting an oil stat to stop the oil over cooling
