Holy snapping duck poo Batman!!! At today's exchange rate, that's about $2.40 Australian! We're currently paying $1.20 to $1.30/litre and complaining like hell about it. Prices were around 90c to $1.10 before XMas.

Out of interest, how much of that is taxes? Where I am (Queensland) there's 38c/l Federal fuel excise and 10% GST - no state taxes. Most (all?) of the other states have some local taxes and their prices are a bit higher.

I'd also be interested to hear what the rate of change has been in your prices over the last year or so? We have gone from prices around the 85c-95c mark 12 months ago to highs of 130c now, with daily variability of 5c-10c. All of this is blamed on "high world oil prices" and "strong US dollar". Are the rest of the world seeing the same volatility or is there a degree of profiteering by the oil companies here?

Oh, those prices are for 92RON unleaded too. I only run 98RON Shell Optimax and that comes at a 10c premium over the plain stuff. In our 2.3l Mazda 6 we have no trouble getting around 45mpg on the highway down to maybe 30 around town.

The Australian Tax Office gives the following rates for work-related use of a personal vehicle:
0 - 1600cc 55c/km
1600 - 2600cc 66c/km
2600cc and over 67c/km

Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing what others are paying around the world.

Dominic

Had this conversation with a couple of Kiwis. They're bitching about NZ$1.70, which works out about £0.60p a litre. Which although it's a lot cheaper is about the same sort of money when you work out salary differences in the different countries.

I seem to remember the government gets about £0.60 in tax per litre.
