Small car, big engine
Chris_R - 27/1/05 at 07:14 PM

Right, If you weren't building a Locost/Indy/Luego etc and chose instead to put a large engine in a small car, strip it to it's bones and uprate the suspension, what would you choose?

zilspeed - 27/1/05 at 07:20 PM

Toyota Starlet RWD

Cosworth YB RS500 engine.

Jag back axle.

I will see if he has pictures yet, last time I checked the top and bottom rails were built and the engine was mocked up in it

JoelP - 27/1/05 at 08:08 PM

i would put a busa turbo in the back of a new smart roadster. or a 3dr nova.

I was thinking about a ZVH in a stripped Fiesta, sure it's been done though.

stephen_gusterson - 27/1/05 at 10:22 PM

biggest engine I could get in a bond bug.

low weight, and big shock factor :0

nick205 - 27/1/05 at 10:26 PM

Mine would be a Pug 205 with a mid mounted 3.0 V6 driving the rear wheels - similar concept to the V6 Clio

JoelP - 27/1/05 at 10:33 PM

thats a good idea nick - 205s can look quite nice at times.

Volvorsport - 27/1/05 at 10:37 PM

a reliant kitten with mid mounted venturi 600 hp v6 turbo - or just an alpine

907 - 27/1/05 at 11:13 PM

I like your "3dr Nova" Joel

You could have some fun on a saturday night down the local town.
Borrow the wifes make up, paint some "bumfluff" on yer top lip, a few zits,
an' a baseball cap on backwards,

then leave a couple of "darkies" at the traffic lights.

andyps - 28/1/05 at 04:20 PM

Mark Allanson's reminds me of a car I used to see hillclimbing - a Fiat 500 with a mid mounted supercharged AlfaSud engine. It was road legal and looked standard apart from wheels and small arch extensions.

jacko - 28/1/05 at 05:41 PM

How about a Rolls Royce merlin 27 ooocc v12 in a capri

subk2002 - 28/1/05 at 07:22 PM

carcentric - 28/1/05 at 09:12 PM

Cadillac Northstar V8 (with FWD platform) installed where the rear seat would go in a 2-door Morris Minor tourer.

nick baker - 18/2/05 at 12:26 PM

looks worryingly like a v12 merlin!!

I'd be putting a busa turbo into the back end of a stripped 1992 Renault clio Williams...

Just happen to have one of those infact... (without the busa turbo)

Either the Busa, or a neatly shortened Scooby-Doo Impress-her 4wd system...

bob - 18/2/05 at 01:11 PM

yep it is a merlin, the sound made a small group of petrol heads run over for a look. Rescued attachment Picture 001.jpg

A Merlin only to those who are bad at maths -- count the cylinders ; V8 --- all Merlins were V12 and supercharged.
The engine is a Rover Meteor V8 most likely from a Thronycroft Mighty Antar tank transporter. Like everything else about the imfamous Dodds car all hype.

[Edited on 18/2/05 by britishtrident]

Snuggs - 18/2/05 at 01:47 PM

I can see 5 pipes and from the angle of the pic there could easily be another just out of shot.

britishtrident - 18/2/05 at 02:46 PM

Dosen't alter the fact it is not a Merlin --- Rolls-Royce placed an injunction on the original builder of the car from claiming it was.

Two Exhaust ports per exhaust stack on a Merlin. There was only every one engine that had THOSE rocker covers, - THE MERLIN.

Hmm, Engine in that photo IS a V12, NOT a v8.

I did actually see first hand THE John Dodds RR merlin engined car. TAINT NO B*LLSH*T. It was real & went like stink. It sounded THE business.

All he had to do was to stop using THE Grille.

bob - 19/2/05 at 10:25 AM

I seem to remember being there hence the picture,12 cylinders but whatever!!!

Rorty - 20/2/05 at 01:21 AM

I've mid-mounted RV8 engines in several VW Beetles, one was a 5.1 litre.
If I had the oportunity to build another mid-car-engine saloon, it would probably be a V6 into a Peugot or Civic. Though I really fancy a ZX12 in the middle of something innocuous looking.

clbarclay - 20/2/05 at 02:45 AM

Not sure whever it was a merlin or another similar engine, either way it had about 24litre capacity engine in three banks.

This lump was fitted to a 40's/50's racing car (the vintage when they still had exposed friction dampers), and the noise it made

I saw it at a Donington Park about 10 years ago so the memories hasey.

The alternative for vehicels with OTT engines is the icelandic off roaders.
Try www.icecool.is

I saw these once at swindon, i'm know studying 'off road vehicle design' need i say any more.

Could be the napier railton which had a 24litre aero engine fitted with a wierd formation of cylinders,3 banks of 4 cylinders in what some people call a W formation but looks more like a Y.

Great sound but very little brakes, can be seen at the Brooklands museum in weybridge surrey

Peteff - 20/2/05 at 11:02 AM

It was used as a HGV recovery vehicle. The cylinder head in it would have been level with the car roof. It was about 4' tall from sump to top. He also had a Magirus Deutz air cooled V8 diesel which sounded brilliant.

[Edited on 20/2/05 by Peteff]

Simon - 21/2/05 at 12:45 AM

Here's a link to the Napier Railton site (has sound too)

http://www.brooklands.org.uk/reunion/naprail.htm

Truly beautiful car!

My next project is to stick a turbo'ed A Series into a Metro

Or a bike engined Mini, or

may take to nice Mr Rorty about mid-engined Beetles (if I can get an immaculate shell for a tenner), or

may just get: http://www.dreadnought-tvr.co.uk/news_article.php?report_id=27

May have to do an extension to the house.

Then move!

Peteff - 21/2/05 at 12:49 AM

That would be an MG Metro turbo then, I think it's already available. If there are any still on the road that is.

tomm - 21/2/05 at 05:54 AM

Locost with 2 litre with TB's and aeroscreens are all you;ll ever need, nice and light with plenty of grunt 170+BHP from a standard Zetec with TB's - Plenty oh and you get tractor[diesel] MPG too

ettore bugatti - 21/2/05 at 01:45 PM

-Japanese mini van (keiclass) with midengine SBC
-Audi 80 with Audi 4.2 v8
-BMW e30 touring BMW 4.4 v8

-Lada with small block
-BMW Mini Cooper with Chrysler 2.2 and 4wd

Oh bugger

As work is only three miles from home, I think it would be quite novel to have an electric car to get to work. Maybe a modded golf cart (might need a bike engine) or finish my GT500 but electify it!

Not running yet but should be finished this year. www.racingstrong.com

liam.mccaffrey - 22/2/05 at 05:14 PM

i like the v8 lada very nice!

I seem to remember that you could get a conversion from a company in germany to convert a smart roadster to a 300 BHP V6 turbo engine, Apologies if its already been mentioned

Also on my projects list is a standard looking RV8 4WD Mk1 fiesta

[Edited on 22/2/05 by liam.mccaffrey]

Benzine - 22/2/05 at 05:32 PM

I'd put a V8 in a micra then drive it off a cliff or a car crusher, best places for Micras

Seriously though, I'd put a jet engine in a trabant

I love speed :-P - 22/2/05 at 08:32 PM

no no ur all wrong, a mid engined mpv something with about 600-800 bhpstill 300-4400 bhp per ton, same as a locost, the look on boy races faces when an mpv leaves them for dust

Was it rear-mounted or mid-mounted? There were quite a few Beetles getting around in the 70s with all manner of engines mated onto the poor old standard transaxle' everything from Frod Pinto engines to SBCs. They usually went OK until they encountered the first bend in the road.

clbarclay - 22/2/05 at 09:44 PM

Not quite as slow looking as an MPV, but i've seen an audi 80 set up for drag racing on the inside, but with normal looks on the outside, road legal as well.

Can't remember its quarter time, but it was holding is own agains all the custom chassis in the same road legal class.

Complete front subframe from 3 litre Alfa 164 boshed in the back of a lovely little Cinq. Fits so well they must have had it in mind all along. No good photos yet I'm afraid...

Ok serious engine HP stakes it has got to be the Napier Sabre as fitted to Hawker Tyhpoon's. About the same size as a merlin but........24 cylinder H block, sleeve valve mga monster. I believe they were rated at about 3000hp!.
They have got one on display at duxford, but I would love to get hold of a functioning one.

MakeEverything - 22/7/08 at 09:06 PM

Id love to see a Jag V8 on a go kart (modified) chassis. It would be like riding the engine itself!!
