shielded cable
t11 - 29/10/11 at 08:26 PM

Hi all, can someone point me in the direction of some single core shielded cable, I need it for the water and air temp inputs on my ms2, I've been advised to use it as the loom from the ecu to the engine is about 5-6 ft I have the vr and tps sorted.........

Megasquirt reccomends that you should use sensors with two connections and wire the sensor ground right back to pin 19.

Not come across single core sheilded cable before - Correction Farnell do one.

You are only measuring a resistance not monitoring a signal (as the VR) so dont think you need screened cable anyway.

2 wire sensors & twisted pair cable.

Hi Guy's thanks for the reply's the idea was to use the screened cable was to use the screen as the sensor earth with the other end as you say going back to pin 19, this ideawas given to me by Dale at Bailey performance who is going to set up the ecu once I've got it running..............

A twisted pair will do almost the job and be a lot easier to terminate.
The principal behind a twisted pair is both conductors follow (almost) exactly the same path so any interference in either wire is cancelled out.

I have used www.polevolt.co.uk for cables etc in the past. Always dispatched the same day, delivered next morning.

Personally, I will be using ordinary thin wall cable, the reason you twist cable together is to cancel any induced magnetic fields created from interference -say spark plugs, alternator etc. The opposing magnetic fields in each wire cancel each other out.

As BT says works like a shielded cable and easier to terminate.

Just run your wires away from any potential sources of interference, use screened for the VR sensor on the crank.

If you want shielded cable, try Microphone cable...I robbed some shielded cable out of an old engine bay loom from something (might have been an Omega, but any car will do with injection).

Hi Gordon,

Sorry i should have explained myself better! i use 2 core overall screened cable (from Rapid Electronics) The TPS needs 3 wires, so i use the overall screen for the ground, the red core for the 5v ref and the blue core for the signal.

For the air and water temp sensors you could use the 2 inner cores and ground the screen at the ECU end only.

The VR sensor requires 2 wires, same as the temp sensors.

Definitely worth using screened cable for your installation, as you will be running all the wires from the ECU together for a few feet. As pointed out on the forum it is not normally required to use screened cable for temps sensors, but in your case it is!

Please txt email if you require anymore info

Cheers Dale.
