Could any one tell me the weight in Kgs of the ford type9 and mt75 boxes?

Is it just out of curiosity, or helping you decide which 'box to go for?
IMHO go for the type 9. They are slightly heavier, but on the plus side there are shitloads in scrapyards, the propshaft is a lot easier to sort, the
bellhousing can be changed to fit loads of different engines should you so fancy, and you can buy tuning stuff for them too if you fancy a fiddle with
gear ratio's at a later date. Quickshifts are a doddle to make too. There is nothing wrong wth the MT75, (except they are rarer in scrappys, its huge
by comparison, rattles like crazy on idle, has a stupid propshaft output..for kit-car use anyway, and any desire to play with ratio's is stamped on by
the fact that gearsets cost thousands rather than hundreds) and are used reliably by a lot of people.

According to the Fluke motorsport weightlist the weight of the 4 speed is 22kg w/o bellhousing and the 5 speed is 33 kg w/o bellhousing.

In what carmodel/year would I find a 4-speed type9 and what ratios would it have?
I am looking to use a car gearbox in a BEC to first get reverse and second to be able to change gear ratio without changing the diff...
The only problem as I see that would kill the idea it is the extra weight...
This is exactly what I am thinking of doing myself as i need a reverse gear to be able to fit a bike engine as my drive is on a slope.
I have considered it a few times and been put off by the weight argument but thinking about it BECs still go well with a passenger in them so the
extra 30 or 40 kg from the gearbox shouldnt be to bad.
The MT75 has a fixed bell housing and is a bit more bulky also, so I would consider the type 9 the best to use.
The hardest part is to support the input shaft correctly and transfer the drive from the bike engine to it, but im sure a modified front bearing
housing could be made and a driveshaft could be fitted with the centre from a clutch plate or made to measure.
The other advantage is i can keep my mechanical speedo drive from the gearbox.

I was also wondering if the gears 1 to 3 couold be taken out or at least the mech for them to lower the weight?
I am building a BEC with R1 and already got a adapter from the outgoing on the engine to the prop shaft from a sierra.
My plan was to use two joints and produce a short shaft. The gearbox would also replacing the center bearing that I otherwise would need. Center
bearing + electric reverse is not weightless either. It also sounds good to be able to change the secondary ratio from 3,62 to 2,97 on the way home
from trackday...

best way to lighten a type 9 is to get an aluminium shell for it. This is not cheap though!

What is the weight of that you think?
Think Westfield sell something simular and that is about £1000 in sweden...
My idea is to remove everything apart from the main shaft and reverse gears and also keep the 5th gear which is in a seperate housing on the end of
the gearbox. This would remove a few kilos from the weight and as you say there is no need for a centre bearing or electric motor etc for reverse, so
may only end up weighing an extra 20 or 25 kilos more than a conventional set up with electric reverse. The alloy casings seem far to expensive just
to save another few kg.
I will try and obtain a cheap type 9 box and strip it out to see, but it is a winter project for me.

4th gear is just straight through coupling of the main shaft, if i remeber correctly5th is about .82 to one ratio.Ihave a 3.89 diff so should work
well.

I think I also have to keep the fourth gear. The less then 3 ratio with fifth is not perfect at all times...
I need to see the inside ofa type9....
That would be a perfect 3,19 for highway use when in fifth then...
