Steering rack - Modified CAPRI
Locost? - 8/3/04 at 07:32 PM

I remember reading an article about modifying a capri rack to make it fit a car with dimesions as per 'book'. Can't remember where i saw it? Can anyone help. Have just spent too much time making a peugeot 205 rack fit only to realise that when i steer left the wheels turn left (as per clown car) DOH!

If we define Escort dimensions as standard, IIRC the Capri track is 2" wider than Escort. And therefore the steering arm BJs are 2" further apart than standard/Escort.

Therefore presumably you need to chop out 2" from the middle of the rack to end up with Escort dimensions (and prevent bump steer issues)
You will then need to add on 1" extensions to each steering arm itself (assuming you can't just wind the track rod BJs out 1" to compensate ).

I'm not exactly sure how to chop down the rack as I cheated and got MK to do mine (Sierra).

If you're desperate just to get it done then I don't think a second hand Escort rack is that expensive- maybe as much as £50 but I've seen them for half that.
Also, if you've got a Capri rack to sell then that'll off-set the cost!

Also you could get a Sierra rack and ask MK to chop it for you but bear in mind your mount points will need to be very different!

HTH,

James

That's what they're supposed to do.
