just wanted to add
IF there was a bec like the Atom for £2500 otr do you think it would sell ?

If there was I reckon it would sell like hot cakes. However, I just don't reckon it'd be possible. Even at double the money it'd be tight.

If you can make me on for 2500 I'd have it. I'd want the first one, because I don't think you'd stay in business after the first, unless you were subsidising it from a very big inheritance.

The parts alone must come to 4500, and then there's all the labour, legal aspects, development etc etc.

You mean something like THIS

Love to build one, but funds are too tight.

ATB Dan.

rebelrider - 10/8/08 at 08:35 PM

exactly but a locost version
I trying to think of things to add to my business I may build one and see what the out come is throw it on the bay and see what happens

scutter - 10/8/08 at 08:42 PM

Do it, always nice to see personal views on an idea.

hi i think you will find that nitram is already doing one and if you ask the cost you will find that 2500 is not even a starting point -but if you think you can do it then go for it- also i would have one for that sort of cost.

rebelrider - 10/8/08 at 09:05 PM

thats my target. i think i can do it but we shall see

quinnj3 - 10/8/08 at 09:20 PM

theres a guy who imports chassis of off road buggies and then slaps a fireblade engine in it close to me. Its a real racy looking thing and doesn't need sva as its for field use only. They go for £4500 so i don't really see how you can make a car for £2500 and make it worth your while on top of that. Take a look at the car Cloudy is building on the middy section and thats stung him around £5000 already! If you can make it work all credit to you.

adithorp - 10/8/08 at 09:39 PM

But surely it can be done with 10x the budget needed to build a book locost? ;-)

powder coated locost chassies sell for £500-600. Add a minimal floor, like the atom, a firewall and a seat and you're up to £1000. Minimal body work includes wings and some sort of nose cone plus an engine cover. £500 - 1000. Did I hear that cycle wings that turn with the front wheels will be outlawed by IVA? Anyway, lets say you get all the working parts from a donor vehicle, save for BEC gear shift, coupling to the diff and exhaust. You need those parts plus wishbones, springs and dampers and maybe track rod extensions. Oh, and seatbelts.

Perhaps you could do it with economies of scale but in kit car volumes, I doubt it. Plus, most people seem to be scared of electrics and would want a loom supplied, rather than extending the bike loom.

If you can do it though, I'd love to see it.

rebelrider - 10/8/08 at 10:07 PM

design work will start in the morning

nitram38 - 10/8/08 at 10:56 PM

Unless you have all your own tube rollers and lathes etc, it will cost you a lot more.
The MotaLeira is as close as you can get.
Bearing in mind all of my parts (except the 650 mile R1) are new and I am using rod ends, carbon wheel arches etc, so far I have spent 15K
That is without creating a jig for production runs like you will have to create.

Daft question - what would a rolling chassis cost minus engine?

ie chassis welded and painted, wishbones, wheels (steels / second hand alloys) and uprights, steering, seats (foam) and seat belts, lights and electrics.

surely that could be done for 2.5k. Not sure how much profit they'd be mind you & things like curved tube would probably end up being a 'no'.

rebelrider - 11/8/08 at 08:20 PM

indeed i do have tube rolls and benders brake press, lasers, tube notcher, welding sets that go up to 400 amps and access to every material and thinckness you can think off a rolling chassis will cost next to nothing to make material wise only labour.

COREdevelopments - 12/8/08 at 08:46 PM

i will have one for that price too, i am really loving nitrams and cloudy's work, they are true works of art.
if you have all that equipment then yes you could knock out a chassis very cheap, if it will look anything like cloudy or nitram i will have one!! if it looks like that vstorm then no.
good luck and let us know how you get on.
