Disappointed with tank capacity
nitram38 - 31/5/08 at 11:43 AM

After 6 weeks I finally got my basic fuel tank sorted out.
It is an unusual shape to fit my chassis.
It is short of the bottom of the car because of the fuel pump sticking out and the angles are to allow for the floor tub and chassis rails. (the welding needs re-doing as it looks rough, but I don't have to pay for it.) There is the fuel pump flange still to be added along with a 2" filler and two 8mm fuel pipes.
After it is sorted, it will be polished/anodised in this colour:

To handle it is quite large, but filling it with water told a different story.
It's capacity is only 6 gallons or 27 litres.
Anyone know how far an R1 bec will go on that?

pure guess. 120 miles

I'm sure someone who knows will be along soon to confirm.

the majority of standard 7 fuel tanks are only 30 litres.

what can an R1 manage fuel economy wise? 25? 30mpg?

at 25 mpg, it's 150 miles. you weren't planning on touring in it were you? either way, there's a petrol station at least every 150 miles.

I thought I was going to get around 40-45 litres so a bit of a shock, but I just found out that the atom is 30 ltrs.
I don't like stopping too often!
Should do Donnington from Mitcham Surrey so OK.

is there any other space for an aux tank or two?

Not unless you want it on your lap!
I have thought about extending the tank where I can, but I think it will look a bit cr*p.

i wondered if there'd be much room in the nose, but that means a lot of plumbing, extra pumps blah blah blah, oh, and er, what might happen in a crash...

bikes have to stop every hundred or so, some ever 60 odd miles! Your car strikes as pretty no comprimise, it's hardly a grand tourer so why are a few extra fuel stops a problem?

The tin top does 200 miles, but 150 is fine.

I wish i could do that much!!! I have to drive with a light foot to do over 100 miles on a tank.

i have a 30litre tank and the carbs are currently running so rich, i can just about get 90 miles out of a tank.

this is a 1.6 pinto indy with blade carbs. thirsty or what? really must get it booked in at boggs or it'll never get through the mot.
