I wish to shorten my GSXR sump if it is possible. Has anyone had this done to their sump?
Mine is just too close to the ground.
Any adverse effects from doing such a thing?
I'd be interested in this on my blade as it catches a couple of things (Nothing major)
Billet sump could be an option - No GSXR ones there at the mo but it might be worth contacting andy
Billet Sumps
Ok, having taken a look at my sump it would seem all i need to do is take off the part that sticks out the bottom with the sump plug on it. You can
just make out the part I mean at the bottom of this picture:-
If I was to shave that part off and weld a flat bottom with sump plug in place would that affect my engine at all?
Obviously I would need to modify the pickup but thats not an issue.
Please shout if you think doing this is going to blow my engine up.
My uncle has modded lots of bike engine sumps in a similar way, albeit mostly ZX9s and some Blades, and although each engine is different,
there's nothing inherently wrong with what you're doing.
It may be worthwhile welding in a few additional vertical baffles around the pickup because with a flat bottom the oil is going to run away a little
easier, and on top of that you're reducing the capacity a little unless you box out the sump to regain some of that.
Also double check you can mod the pickup easily too, because with the R1 for example its very difficult to shorten it because its cast at an angle,
not vertical. Also check that the pickup doesnt sit too close to the base and also if the original sump base has pickup support posts cast into it,
replicate this on the modded sump so the pickup can't drop down at all.
Before you ask though, since starting a new jog my uncle can't do them any more unfortunately.

Simply chop and weld, the quality of the alloy is dire so it's a tad difficult to get a clean job. Here's my 750:

By the way, if you can get Andy to machine up a swinging GSXR1000 sump then count me in. He only deals with the 'popular' engines, so
wasn't too keen on having a batch made for the Suzuki - it's a tad rare.
I'll DEFINITELY make a financial commitment if firm orders are needed.
Agree about the ali quality, they're often pretty bad and therefore hard to weld, although intererstingly Kawasaki with the ZX9 at least, use far better quality ali in the sump pan than Honda.
Thanks for the comments guys, I have found somebody willing to build me a billet sump for £200.
Would anyone else like one to suit a GSXR1000 before I order mine?
Sump will be exactly the same as the following pictures:-
Will be ordering before the end of the week so speak up now if you want one.
