Hi guys, wel having spent many hours reading and digesting all manner of info and more or less deciding on an R1, i thought i'd give Mal at
Yorkshire engines a call and he's thrown a spanner in the works!! He rates the GSXR very highly, and it would appeear that MK do now too. They
have been testing one reccently. No dry sump either, and no problems. So come on guys, the floor is open now. HELP!!
One thing i would like to know is overall height of the two units, so if someone has that info that would be spot on. Thanks Guys.
Apparently this is the one to have the GSXR100 2006 K5, it's the biz.
MAC1 also rate it and have done a car with one in it.
It only weighs 62kg iirr.
Only problem at the moment is that obviously it's expensive as it's very new but as the price drops I reckon everyone will be after them.
Basically if you can afford it then it would seem the best option.

A 2006 might be just over budget, but a mate of mine who is pretty big on bikes is saying that 2004 gsxr was better than an R1 from the same year. All these decisions. It has to be said that the R1 is slightly cheaper, but not by that much!
what you want to spend would be the big decider
both engines would be fine
I think only driver ability round a track would get the extra power from a new gixer engine over lets say a carbed r1 engine

R1 is more proven - you pay your money and take your chance!
Thats very true hellfire, was that your thinking with the ZX12R too, thats not too well tested i don't think either is it? Good to be different sometimes too. Almost a pioneer!!
the gsxr almost certainly needs a dry sump the r1 doesnt. the stuart taylor rgb cars blew up several gsxrs (im not sure if they were k4 or k5) before
they dry sumped them, the newer engine might be ok but its alot of money to risk. having said that im not planning to dry sump my 2006 r1 but thats
only because the previous ones have been bulletproof.

We are installing a k5 in our mac#1 worx, just found this in the manual.Have added a baffle plate too just to be safe.

Have fitted a GSXR1000 to our avon with a
extreme engines dry sump.
This sump is the one used by Stuart Taylor and
Radical. Stuart Taylor stated he had no further
problems after fitting it. £1200+Vat OUCH !
Beautifully engineered though
TTS in Northampton suggested earlier engines
K2, K3 are slightly stronger than newer models,
to increase power and lose weight material
had been taken fron rods and pistons making
them slighty weaker than earlier engines.
i spoke to mac 1 they have a gsxr 1000 with a sump baffle
he says it not a prob and no plans to dry sump it !
so who knows
Oh what fun! Still none the wiser and still un decided, got a feeling its going to be a suck it and see, will be very keen to see how mac#1 and MK fair with no dry sump. Think a baffle plate seems an almost must on most big bike engines, all down to the altered orientation it seems!! i don't plan on doing track days, so heavy braking and acceleration on a regular braking shouldn't be too much of a worry to me. Oh what fun, this car builkding thing gets more interesting by the day. Cheers guys!!
i,ve been in mk's gixzer and it certainley does have the edge on th r1, i noticed straight away even on normal roads, seems more punchy and
torquey, and quicker throttle response.
