R1 prop adaptor/engine clearance
locoboy - 11/4/06 at 07:20 PM

I have just bought a prop adaptor from Ebay, it fits on the splines ok but the clearance between the edge of the adaptor and the gearbox casing (at least i think thats what it is ) is a little bit on the worrying side, its about 2mm

My prop adaptor is 109mm in diameter with the holes 60mm apart in one direction and 68mm in the other (they form a rectangle as opposed to a square - if you know what i mean!)

Does this sound right?

All the other prop adaptors i have seen seem to look smaller then this to me.......

I can measure the diameter of mine at the weekend and take some pics if nobody has one to hand, but the "rectangle" spacing of the bolt holes is the same as mine

Turn it round the other way.

I don't have a pic of mine as it's off being modified but the recessed part should be towards the propshaft. The nut then goes in the recess. The other side on mine then leaves enough space for the bolt head and enough 'comfort' space for me to be happy.

I cant get a decent pic of it but just checked mine and although I cant really see, by feel its only a few mm clearance down the side nearest the crank, certainly no more than 5mm.

I will post a piccy tomorrow and see what your think.

Thanks so far.

finnally got round to taking a piccy

sprocket clearance
sprocket clearance

I can just about slide my steel rule into the gap between the sprocket adaptor and the engine casing

Surely thats not right???????

As I mentioned before I cant get in to see mine now its all fitted, butif mine had been that close Id think I would have remembered it, so Id say mine is a smidge smaller in diameter. Not a million miles different though

speed8 - 23/4/06 at 07:10 PM

I don't remember mine being that close when I trial fitted.

I'll check when I get it back if you are still not too happy with it.

wouldnt mind a bit or reasurrance Cheers Chris and Speed8

I could take a bit of meat off the adaptor but maybe only 1mm or so as there is not really a lot of meat outside the holes for the prop to bolt to.

cheers

I really cant get at mine without taking the prop off but it might be worth just calling someone like MK and ask them to measure the diameter of one of their ouput flanges, thats where mine came from.

Assuming the picture attaches correctly, you should be able to see that mine has quite a bit more clearance than yours, but I got my flange from MNR. I wouldn't like to have less than about 5mm clearance for any rotating parts like that

PS the preview doesn't show the picture so I have added it to my photo archive. Rescued attachment engine flange.JPG

This begs another question then..............

The diameter of my adaptor is governed by the placement of the holes for the propshaft to bolt to......

Is mine an odd sized hole pattern?
60mm spacing the one way and 68mm the other (forming a rectangle as opposed to a square)

If mine is odd can anyone confirm the spacing on theirs and i can get mine machined down and re drilled and tapped?

Cheers

My prop adaptor looks almost identical to dmac's. IIRC the propshat on mine has sierra rear and escort front UJs (Bailey Morris).

Can't really tell from the pic Locoboy but shouldn't there be a larger relief around the centre nut for the rased part of the propshaft to locate in?

I must admit looking at that (slightly large ) pic, that looks closer to the size of mine than the bigger one, although I certainly havent got that much clearance down the side, so maybe its something else in the way that Im feeling to give the impression of only 5mm clearance.
