Sump Chop or Sump Guard

I am worried about the sump on my ZZR Indy. It is about 65mm below the chassis rails.

As the car is up on trestles at the minute I can't tell if this is going to be too low. Don't really want to get it onto the floor only to find out I need to raise it back up again.

What is the finished ride height of an Indy?

Chris Gamlin's uncle has kindly offered to chop the sump for me. However I want to check that it is neccessary before I go ahead.

As an alternative I could fabricate a sump guard if the ride height is OK.

ZX9R is like that and it's really low in my locost chassis so I had it chopped. It also adds the benefit of moving the sump plug to a better position. You could put a skid under it but that would make it even lower.

Get a sump and oil pickup off a GPZ 900. It's a direct swap and is 74mm shorter.

i assume the gpz900 sump is an alternate fit for the zzr and not the zx9r??? i am in a similar situation with the zx9r, a sump swop sounds like an ideal situation!

Chris Gamlins uncle did my sump. He makes a realy good job, definately recommended.

And after you get it chopped - put a guard on it as well. Don't want to loose your sump for the sake of a bit of sheet..... you never have to worry about speed bumps again- I've scraped over many of them.

Correct. The GPZ sump will fit the ZX10 and ZX11 and (ZZR1100). The ZX9 is a different family of engines.
It may be worth looking at the ZX6 and ZX7 for alternative sized sumps for the ZX9.

Jasper, you might want to edit your post. No wonder you haven't sold that car yet!!

I'm going to look into the price of 3mm stainless steel plates with 25mm diameter holes in for use under the new / chopped sump.

I've got 5mm ali chequer plate under my engine - safe as houses - if it doesn't scrape occasionally it 'aint low enough

Blade doesn't normally need a sump chop - just put a sump guard on it.

Chris's uncle John did mine as well, nice job too. I've read of people having Fireblade drain plugs repositioned, don't know how vulnerable they are though.

Talked to MK said mybe move the sump plug, so will do that this week somtime i think.

My Blade sump`s on its way to Uncle Gamlin for plug movement, I intend to fit a guard too... Not realy worth the risk, and you can always move it to the new engine when you blow this one
