Ball Park

Right. assuming I've already bought an engine (ZX14/12 or Busa) what will it cost me to convert my Zetec engined Phoenix to a BEC? Ball park figures. Is there any engine I can fit which will get under the bonnet without the holes for an airbox.

I'm toying with the idea of a BEC conversion rather than work on my Zetec to take it to 240-250BHP.

So costs would be

Engine
Engine Mounts
Dry Sump (?)
Propshaft
exhaust headers
reverse gearbox
airbox
power commander (or use the existing Omex 600?)

The existing engine runs on Jenveys so there is a swirl pot, LP & HP pumps etc.

Oops, misread post.

Use existing Omex, you could probally swap over the Jenveys as well if you knock up a manifold with a kink which allows you to keep everything tight under the bonnet, maybe use a nice curve as mines a bit rough but works well enough!

depends how much you can get for your zetec,...? what's that worth,...?

froggy - 12/10/11 at 07:12 PM

seeing as your on aftermarket management wouldnt a centifugal blower do the job rather than a full engine swap ?

Have a look here http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=154398 i detailed how much it cost me to go from a pinto to zx10r. Not cheap, but for me the difference in performance was massive, having said that a 250 horse zetec wont be slow off the mark.
I think if my car had been a zetec i would have looked at turbo or charger conversions, the pinto was a bit long in the tooth though.... and weighed as much as my daughters pug 107.

Or a low pressure turbo...

jeffw - 12/10/11 at 08:30 PM

The Zetec is running 210BHP now. To turbo or supercharge it I would need to change rods & pistons as well as cams. And if I was going to do that it would be better to go the NA route. But I still wouldn't have a sequential box ....

Interested to see what people suggest.

Jeff, welcome to the dark side.

gsxr1100wp fits under, but too old.
zx10r from around 2004 is a tiny little engine but probably too weak for you.

The later models with secondary injection (and all the power) are all a bit tall so I don't think you will get away without a bonnet chop. Dry sump would help, but probably not enough.

Do you really want to have reverse? or is it needed in your sprint series.

Don't think you will get to 240bhp though, not without forced induction.

jeffw - 12/10/11 at 08:46 PM

I think 180-190 would do it with the decrease weight.

Remember the cost of getting your suspension sorted to match the new engine.

ETA

Would it not be cheaper to fit a 2.3 duratec with a little work for 240ish bhp?

2.3 Duratec is a £4-5K conversion and still not sequential box.

Jeff,

Forgot that R1 from around 2004 fits ( Mr Giblett built one of those, now owned by Lee ).

My guess is that if you are going to do this then Gen2 Busa is the only answer for you, as there are so many tuning bits. But I think you would end up spending a lot and having to have a bonnet bulge.

Looking at the Fury and Phoenix in RGB you will notice that they all have bonnet bulges. If you use an alternative airbox and move the secondary injectors then it seems quite a good way to lose horse power, which is why those chaps just cut a bonnet hole and go racing.

In terms of costs. replacement diff? cooling system mods? Oil cooler mods? Prop~£200. manifold £600. Power commander £250. Engine mounts £100. Gear shift stuff £100.

11000rpm, 200bhp from 80kg. Priceless.

Matt

Back to thinking about a Gen2 Busa. Speaking to someone who would do the work I reckon we are talking £2.5K plus the engine fitted and running with an accumsump/swinging pickup etc.

Which leaves me with the Zetec Blacktop, Jenveys, Omex, CNC Head & Cams, BGH HD Alloy type 9 etc etc for sale. I reckon I can probable get it all done and dusted for a net £3K....

Is this what you think you should get for your setup?

jeffw - 17/10/11 at 09:27 PM

Don't know. I reckon Busa + BEC parts and fitting are going to be £5k-6K or even as much as 7K. My Zetec/Jenveys/Omex/BGH Alloy Type 9 etc etc has got to be worth £3-4K but it is if I could actually sell it for that. A 200+BHP Zetec from Raceline or Dunnel without the gearbox would cost £5K.

franky - 17/10/11 at 09:32 PM

Its such a nice setup you've got there, seems a shame to sell. there was a sequential box on ebay that went for £1500. Would a box with your current setup, looking towards a small blower not be the best way forward?

jeffw - 17/10/11 at 09:35 PM

A decent sequential is going to be £3K and a supercharger kit plus all the extra gubbins is £5K so.....not sure its worth it.

Or I could buy this and fix it
