Upgrading to bike engine
scoobyis2cool - 30/7/04 at 04:59 PM

Coming to the end of my pinto build now and am looking to upgrade the engine in the not too distant future.

R1 looks to be a strong contender, i was just wondering what mods I would need to make to my Indy chassis in order to fit one? I know I'd need an engine cradle, are these bolt-on or do they need welding? Do I need any other bits adding to the chassis?

Any help appreciated,

Pete

Just had another thought - are there different versions of the R1 available? Are there any in particular I should look out for/avoid?

Look out for the newest engine you can afford.

Your best bet would be to get the engine first then weld a cradle to suit it .Mk sell cradles but it might not fit the chassis.Thay would make one up for you im sure give them a phone.

MK do an R1 cradle but on the bike chassis there is an extra chassis member in the engine bay that the cradle sits on. Give Phil a call and I'm sure they will let you know the best way of doing it.

As far as an engine goes the R1 is a great engine and if I remember rightly you can actually pick up a new one at a reasonable price. Jim Giblett who posts on here bought one for his Pheonix so he may be able to give you some info.

You will also need the prop shaft modifying and obviously some of the electrics and the exhaust but it's all perfectly feasable.

Rich.

Yeah I see the chassis rail you mean, I'm sure it would be possible to weld one in, although I can't weld myself so would need to get someone to do it for me. Cradle looks simple enough to install as well.

I've got a spare propshaft sitting around so thats not a problem.

I'll concentrate on getting my pinto indy finished and then take a trip up to MK and discuss it with them, better get saving I suppose!

I bought my new (old model) R1 engine complete with loom, clocks and rad from PDM who import new bikes and strip for components.

Nice people to do business with, no connection just a satisfied customer.

Cheers
