Engine in its hole but....

Afternoon all spent a few hours out in the garage with my dad today finished removing all the old crossflow bits from my locost. I am replacing it with an old ZX10 engine. Thought I'd share a few progress pics.

Now my question is getting the engine sat correct in the best location. We have chocked it up so that it is far across to the passenger side and so that the prop adaptor is pointing down the tunnel. I have leveled the kwak badge on the front of it too. The sump is sat about an inch below the lower chassis rails.

Next weekend we are going to start mocking up some templates for the hangers but before we do I was hoping some of you clever locosters could pass on a few tips inits final location.

Which sump are you using ?

A GPZ900 will give you lots more clearance.

Top rail isn't going to clash with manifold is it?

I have the GPZ900 fitted which is much shorter than to zx10 item. The exhaust is going to be a head ake the headers will need to be moded. As mention I have tried to get it as far back as possible but im not 100% on its position. are there any other key points I should be looking to do??

This is the engine fitted in Roadrunners car the engine is a zx9r

Is there much size difference between the two engines ?? I'm thinking about building a frame around the engine an then
Hanging that into the chassis. Are there any locoster running bike engines local to Southampton that wouldn't mind letting me have a look in
Their engine bay??

It looks twisted. The output adaptor flange should be parallel to the diff input flange.

It is twisted to an extent. It's not in it's final location yet just dropped in to an idea. The problems I can see are to get the prop adaptor pointing the correct way the exhaust will be to tight up to the chassis member. I'm going to lift it out again next week and move it around measure it for the new metal work.

its defo pissed. dont line it up to the outer chassis rail like you have or you will kill props very quickly. run a string down the centre of the car from the diff and do all measurements off that

My engine is slightly on the wee for packaging reasons. I do keep an eye on the prop (between outings, not while driving!) but nothing untoward noted as yet.

I'm running the same engine so maybe able to give a couple of suggestions.

I have installed the engine in a more upright position, this does three things.

1: Brings the exhausts over the top chassis rail
2: Moves the prop flange closer to the centre of the car
3: Lowers the height of the carbs to fit them under the bonnet , even now the carbs are still 2" heigher than the cam cover.

The mounting flange for the sump is between 1/2" and 1" above the top of the bottom chassis rail and gives reasonable clearance when using a GPZ sump.

Sorry I was testing whether I could link to my wifes flickr, I can't THIS is the best I can do.

I'm on a shared PC and can't download anything but I'll try and email a couple of pics if you want but it will be tomorrow.

I've only done a couple of thousand miles but so far I've not had any problems.

It's worth sticking the carbs on when positioning the engine, they point upwards more than you would imagine.
