Air filter
Lightning - 23/3/04 at 09:41 PM

I know this has been covered before, but.....
I need an air filter for my blade.
Space very limited and the air box cannot be modified to fit under the bonnet.
From previous threads it would seem that a Pipercross would be the best bet.

Any suggestions where would be the cheapest place to buy one or any suggestions about a similar filter.

engine is dynojetted

I hunted round for a good price and eventually got mine from http://www.needforspeed.co.uk , but there wasnt much difference where i went.
I think mine was a PX600

I wound up getting 4 pipercross airsocks from Burtons I think, again I wasn't able to find much price difference really. There's pics on me website somewhere.

Dont do it dude!!!! OX had a question about this http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=5715
and got many negative remarks. It was good to see that he proved them (non-bike mechanics) wrong and used the original bike airbox!!

Erm I don't think anyone said that a bike engine WONT run with it's orginal airbox!
The reason I got my blade re-jetted was purely so it would fit under the bonnet without a bulge. I can assure you my engine is NOT running worse after it's re-jetting.
I'm not bothered either way - if you can get it to fit with the airbox it's easier than mucking around with the carbs IMHO. But that said if you don';t want a power bulger then you don't have a huge pile of choice. Mind you I did see someone do a nifty airbox mod on their blade engine.....

i didnt prove anybody wrong richi ,many people use the sausage type filters and have no probs .
i hate using these 4 letters IMHO ,but if i had of done in the first place maybe the other thread wouldnt of got so heated

Pics in my archive of modded blade airbox to fit under MK bonnet.

Cheers............Ben

I rejetted the carbs ( not very complex ) and had a sort of airbox made so the sausage filter pokes out of the bonnet. I have a sort of power bulge but its the filter and i get nice cold air from outside, none of that hot engine bay air for me.
The box is away being powder coated at the minute but you can see the effect it gives. Rescued attachment filter.jpg

Once you've fitted the Pipercross I'd get it set up on a rolling road. Even with the 'suggested' jets from TTS, they were all changed during the RR session. Good to know it's spot on and not running lean.

By the way Ben, I was intending to ask you, when I was hoking around with my airbox I didn't see how it was possible to make the cut you made without cutting the actual filter itself! I suspect the airfilter is a bit different for a 94-96 blade as from a 97-99 blade. Is your engine 94-96 by any chance? You didnt have to cut the actual; filter did you?
No I've re-jetted this is fairly academic, I was just wondering!

Lightning - 25/3/04 at 10:53 PM

I only want to put a sausage filter on as the box wont fit under. The Tiger Avon already has a bulge and a pimple on a boil will look awful.
I agree a RR session is a must. The engine is not sucking equally anyway.

Yes the engine is a 94' and I did have to cut the top plastic flange off the filter, all the filter element is still intact though.

Cheers

Ben
