My oil filter tried to escape at the end of the back straight at snetts on friday, spraying oil on the exhaust and track. Luckily the oil didn't
ignite and the smoke warned me of the problem and i stopped instantly. I was expecting to see a piston through the side of the block, but after
hunting round noticed the loose filter. When i drained the engine there was about 3.5 litres still in it, and after an oil and filter change i started
her up and she sounds OK, so fingers crossed it will last next weekend!
So how how should i fix the filter to stop this happenning again??
Jubilee clip around filter body, lockwired to filter housing. Simple as that.

Mike

That the first time I’ve ever heard of one coming loose, usually the opposite problem happens. I’d just make a clamp that goes round it with a bracket
that is bolted to the engine block, then it’ll never turn by accident.
there you go, someone else who's obviously had the same thing happen to them

Here's a pic. This is standard race bike/car practice. It works and it's light.
oil filt lock
ETA It's obviously got to be lockwired properly. It may be the angle of the shot but that one in the Whipster's photo does not look as
though it's wired in the right direction.

beaten too it, yeah looks like a common practice

Hi Austen,
Just one question. Is lockwiring of sump plugs, filters etc not obligatory for race cars then?
On bikes it's one of the primary requirements. For what it costs and the time it takes I'd be amazed if it's not mandatory........
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike
Nope not mandatory under MSA. However some formulas do stipulate certain things must have secondary fixings ect.
Cheers Matt
Simple. Punch a hole through the filter and thread the lockwire through that.........
Jubillee clip and wirelock for me every time! And yes to the sump plug and a number of sump bolts. It dosn't take long!
TBH, its standard practice to lock wire sump plug and filter.

is this type of precaution really needed?
I have never seen something liek this mentioned on this forum in over a year of reading (daily)
Have people commonly had plugs and filters let go on track/road that many times to require such a measure? Or, is it just such a given that all
builders do this? (I dont know, like copper greasing the back of brake pads) Its common but never really mentioned as its just so obvious?
My sump plug is skinny, would you still jubilee clip this too?
I don't think it's particularly common for either the filter or the sump plug to come undone but the consequences of losing all your engine
oil can be expensive/disastrous. Lockwiring them both, should prevent it happening in the first place and it is a relatively simple and easy job to do
as a precaution.
We haven't lockwired ours. It's one of those jobs we intend to do but never actually get round to doing.
Phil
I've heard of it on several occasions. Don't take any risks: -
