R1 Oil light/pressure switch solution!
nitram38 - 10/12/08 at 01:04 PM

I know that the oil warning is too low to mean anything, but I like things to work on my cars (bright6).
I have installed a oil pressure switch and an oil take off for a racetech capillary oil pressure gauge.
It consists of a Durite adapter 16.5 X 1.5mm, a 1/8 bsp adapter (tee), an intermotor oil pressure switch 50700 (works at 4.5-7.5 psi) and a 1/8 bsp oil line.
Durite adapter, oil pressure switch from ebay, adapter from think automotive and the oil line from demon tweeks.

wonder if it will work on the fazer as my low level light stays on all the time despite having the right amount + slight over fill

Isn't that to do with the oil level switch (same as R1)?
I will not be bothering with the oil level switch and it will be left disconnected.

yep thats the bugger.......
I would like some warning the engines about to destruct.......so this my be the way forward.
Think its to do with the way the engine sits in the car

It is not much use as the oil warning level is very low and by that time your engine will have gone. The problem with the R1 is that it idles at about 6 psi and so if you had a normal pressure switch, say 25 psi, the light would annoy you.
The correct method (and most expensive) is a digital dash that you can program so that the oil pressure is linked to rpm. The dash works out what revs you are at and only gives you a warning at higher rpm/low pressure.

nice and tidy job.

you may want to blat the engine number out though.

also you need to top up your oil - it needs to be inbetween the two marks right of the view glass - but I guess you know that.

the R1 oil level switch comes on when the oil level in the sump is still higher than the oil pick up pipe. It is still useful as a warning that your oil level is low. An oil pressure light shows that your engine IS BEING starved of oil. An oil level lamp shows that there is a risk that your engine will SOON BECOME starved of oil if you don't do something.

None in there yet!
I still have to change the sump oil drain plug to one that has a magnet/bolt type head (already have it).

The reason I will not include the level light is that I am not using the original clocks and I have heard that it tends to stay on.
Having a capilary oil pressure gauge and a quick check of the sight glass should be enough for me.

In my experience of all things automotive, the oil pressure warning light should be known as the "Ooops too late light" or "time to get your wallet out light"! Last time it happened on my grasser, it was rapidly followed by a further visible and audible warning system - A rod leaving via the side of the block!

Totally agree. The pressure guage is useful at start up or when cranking the engine after an oil change but I am yet to hear that anyone has saved a bike engine once oil pressure has been lost.

Just "dash candy" for 99.99% of the time.
