engine clearence

Hi guys,

engine and gearbox in, but clearence is very tight!!
have enclosed a couple of photos- any opinions / advice on whether it will be a problem?

the closest points are around 5mm from

Is that between the alternator and the steering rack?

Can't realy see it being a problem,its something you will only know if its going to hit when you drive it,depending how much movement you have in your mountings.

sorry but both those pictures are useless - what is it we are looking for/at?

clearance - the engine is going to move a bit - it has to to avoid send bad vibes into the chassis - so is mounted firmly on rubber buffers whcih absorb some of the shake - eve bike engines in bikes have these but on a much smaller scaler (have balamncing shaft and other cunning gubbins about whihc I don;t know too much about).

The engine will move backwards and forwars on hard braking so don;t forget that.

To to answer your question, 5 mm aournd the mounting points you may get away with but at the oppostie end, most likely t he top, I 'd say that is too small - 10 mm - but again depends o nthe engine, position of the mounts and the flexibility of the rubbers.

the problem would seem to be clearance between the alternator fan and your drivers side front brake pipe. Given that the engine will move around a bit I would be tempted to fit a small steel plate to protect the brake pipe just in case..........

Is there any reason you have decided to route your fron flexis inside the front suspension 'box section' rather than coming through the bodywork behind as in the Avon book?

Hi,

thanks for the replies, will try to take some better pictures,
I saw some pictures of an avon built with the brake pipes there- thought it looked like a neat solution- no chance of contact with wheels etc..

closest point of 5mm is where the starter motor runs close to the chassis rail- solonoid part of it is partly above the rail,

the other close point is the alternator to the brake pipe as shown- being first time builder didnt know it would be so close when I did the brake lines!!

would be a big job to move them now!
