Modifying steering shaft
Hi,
As i am living in Cyprus i have difficulties to find needed parts.One of my friends making transportation between UK and Cyprus a few months
intervals.He will leave UK next week.I'm trying to give an orders of some needed parts sufficient to me to make some progress until next period
of transportation
That is the reason of jumping topic to topic.
I check Mr.Jim's book for modification of steering shaft let me show you my questions.
This is the steering shaft of my donor sierra

Description
as you see in the picture he use universal coupling(joint) which either site is welded to put the things together.
I make search and i couldn't find any universal joint which either side is weld-on type.most of them are same as below.Both ends have the
popular 14mm(9/16" x36 female spline.

does tiger uses a specific donor joints?
my another question is:Tiger use 5/8" spherical bearing and 5/8" diameter shaft.Is that shaft, tight with the hole of the spherical ball.I
mean when the shaft turns, are they turn together or not.

to make that kinda modification is not totally safe - you need to also ensure that the shaft is central to the UJ.
the way to do it - and how I am goona do it when the nieghboue with the lathe gets his finger out to make my extension shft, maybe I'll go and
remidn him tonight, is to cut the shaft and sleeve over with CDS tubing.

As I fabricate all the things(hubs,wishbones,chassis...)I thing I can make this modification safely myself.I also have a lathe and mill

i've done something similar to 'jim' (aka jim dudley / tiger).
Except - the shaft that goes onto the steering rack with the additional uj isn't welded by me, its a one piece unit. No idea where i got it
from. I've then bought a rally design splined steering rod extension, cut and sleeved that to the sierra bit in your first picture. IE in your
second picture i've cut the shaft on the left and extended it with a sleeve and rod from rally design. This then pushes into the bit
you've marked with welds.
To support the entire lot i've clamped the bit you've marked with welds shaft in a anti roll bar mounting. It fits very well and turns
easily.

why does the shaft have to be absolutely straight? do you mean the weld onto the uj?
I'm just thinking that on my extension one side is a very tight interference fit (and will be welded) the other is 'slacker' and
(will be) welded. I won't guarantee the 'slacker' joint is perfectly in line but with ignorance i can't see how it makes a
difference as the uj at the end of the shaft is just at a slightly larger angle.

Its also not the bit i'm talking about in the photo, the rally design bit is just a shaft with a spline on both ends. the other bit is like your
picture but with a uj on both ends. It may have come from a sierra with power steering but don't quote me on that.

I agree with you about replacing the spherical bearing but I don't thing that it will make any problem because its working load.My problem is
about spherical bearing.Does the shaft goes trough the bearing hole tightly and rotate together or does it rotate into the bearing hole freely

I was in Cyprus a few weeks ago! Lovely weather for a Seven!!
On the welding front, the description on the CBS site [www.nfauto.co.uk] says the following:
"One end has the popular 14mm (9/16" ) x 36 female spline and the other end will accept a 17mm hex shaft. Overall length 115mm. A steel
shaft can be welded to either end if most of the joint is immersed in a bucket of water to sink away the heat"

let me ask a stupid question.In Jim's book he said he use "spherical bearing"so what is the difference between "spherical
bearing", "Rod ends" and "rose joint"

Different names for the same thing!
Ideally the sperical bearing will be a tight fit on the shaft so the bearing will rotate in its housing.

Just realised - if you want to 'mirror' my setup, buy two of those joints you've posted from CBS.
Connect them together and cut the shaft that you're left with a splined end on and extend to the sierra part - although i suspect its going to
be an expensive way of doing it.

your setup is good but it will cost too much MikeR
I think the cheapest way is to buy a joint from CBS which mentioned by stu and arrange the setup according to your posts

Is it a better idea to buy one from tiger for £70ish or make one?
I'm a plater by trade so the welding wouldn't be a problem, but sourcing the gear seems as expensive as buying one from tiger once you
factor in your time - right or wrong? as I need one in the next month or so.
