Contradictory advice - help needed

I bought a 27,000 mile 1300 xflow last night and was told that the engine would go better if i put on a twin choke Capri carb and better exhaust manifold and was also told by another Old Ford 'expert' not to do this as the power would be flat?!?!?

Who is right and would it be worth spending a few more quid on carb and manifold?

many years ago I had a 1300 mk3 cortina, you can imagine how that performed. I fitted a twin choke weber of a 1300E escort and it made a massive difference to both power and economy.

As long as the carb is jetted properly, the setup can only be an improvement.

After all, what is in a racing Locost?

Too many 'experts', and not enough common sense and experience!

Yep old days road rallying spec. Performance will improve a lot if the components used are sound.

Incidently my friend chris has a few crossflow bits inc twin webbers etc on fleabay right now. u2u if you want the item nos, quick though as some ending today.

In Peter Wallage's x-flow book, he recommends the Weber DGV twin-choke down-draft carb unless you're doing serious tuning. It's efficient, easy to get tuned, and is reliable - as long as it isn't getting old and worn out.

Saying that, I took mine off and fitted bike carbs...

Well seeing as it all points towards getting upgraded then that's what I'll do. I already have the parts offered so no probs there.

The original Fomoc (aka Autolite) single choke carbs used on non-GT Fords were basically cheap junk, they have a lot of trouble even when the cars were just a couple of years old -- spindle wear and other problems.

Quite frequently Fords were converted in the 1970s and 80s using widely available kits to a single choke Weber or Solex or Zenith carbs.
