Sump clearance
Fishface - 19/4/05 at 12:43 PM

Just happened to look under my avon and noticed just how little clearance i have below my sump. I haev a pinto fitted and have used the tiger mounts and rubbers as per the book but at the mo I have 120mm clearance to the underside of the car but only 55mm to the front of the sump.It seems to be beacuse the engine leans forward and to an angle which is what tiger says is how it is.

Anyone else suffering the same problem. Will it be driveable/liveable?

woudnt drive it with 55mm clearance on the sump,

Chop it and mod the oil pick up and you will gain maybe another 50mm and that should be fine.

forgot to say, it is already a tiger supplied modified sump.

i would say there is something wrong then.

Why should the engine lean forwards? surely it should be level?

Can you make it sit level?

Fishface,

Have you got the engine mounts reversed?

With the engine parallel to the chassis, the 4 mounting bosses on the Pinto block sit at an angle. The engine mounts should have bolt hole patterns angled accordingly. This means the engine mounts are handed, i.e. left/right.

Just a thought!

Nick

sorry the pics a bit large....

this is a pic I took at donington last year. It is of an Avon and shows how little ground clearance you get with a Tiger sump!

Looks like ive cracked it. I spoke to someone at tiger who actually has built adn avon and he said he added 4mm paqcking under the drivers side mount. I did the same last night and by doing so it raised it by 25mm. I was well chuffed byut it was a pig to do as i couldnt get to the bolts as the car is nearly finished. That will teach me to not put the wheels on until the last minute. However be warned I now have a problem as it has raised the exhuast so that the hole (already way too big) needs increasing and also the nosecone will have to come off and be repositioned due to the raised engine.

one step forwarded 13 back as usual.

a nice polished stainless (or ally) 'trim' around the exhaust hole3 should cover any adjustment.

I have raised my drivers side mount by 30mm (to make engine level) so I guess i'm in for fun when i get my bodywork !!!

How much clearance do you have between cam shaft pulley and nose cone ? This will give you some idea of the amount of head space to raise the engine further . Richard at Tiger told me that Pintos in Avons are meant to be installed slightly nose down anyway.

just a thought ! I'm installing my pinto this month so would be interested to see how you get on.
