New MK Indy builder
Hi guys,
yes I am taking the plunge and collect my MK Indy kit on Saturday. I shall obviously be trawling through all your threads for tips on making sure my
build goes well but any tips and advice you can give me would be much appreciated, particularly from those of you that have built an Indy with a
Toyota 4AGE engine, because that's what I've gone for. I've already had some advice from DEAN C., which has been great.
I'm particularly interested in knowing who can make up an exhaust manifold for me as MK have not made one for a toyota engined car yet. I tried
MK Engineering but, although they have made a couple they did not jig up for it so would need the car to make one. given that I'm down in
Sussex, that would be a bit involved. Therefore I've either got to find somewhere that has already made one or make a template and send it to
MK Sportscars to get one made. Any help appreciated.
I'd also be interested in engine mount designs and any other advice on the 4AGE installation any of you can provide.
If any of you are going to be at MK on Saturday morning I'm planning to get there at about 1000-1030. I hope to meet up with some of you.
regards
Pete

the Toyota engine. Any other questions you would like to ask please feel free. Regards Trev

Also try Marcels site
http://www.mk-indy.nl/
Its very informative, and a good read, he had to have engine mounts made up but for a zetec. The build diary is pretty good and he talks you through
the mistakes he made so you can avoid them.

I drive past you on route to work at Gatwick...
I had a complete exhaust make for my zetec. I had to trailer the car to him but £350 complete in stainless (manifold to tail pipe). It was made with
the engine in the car so was a perfect fit. He also supplies lots of other kit companies so knows his stuff. I was quoted double that by most people
so even with the cost of a trailer and some gas he was very good value and did it while I waited. Good to watch how it's done. Only slight issue
for you is it would be about a 3.5hr drive...

Donut,
thanks very much for the offer to go and have a look at your Indy, I may well take you up on that.
Also, Zetec thanks for the tip on the exhaust maunfacturer. Where exactly is he? 3.5 hours is quite a long drive though; you said he did while you
waited, must have been a long day!

Pete,
I had a S.Steel exhaust manifold made for me by a guy in Worthing. He came up to Horsham, measured up, returned with a multitude of bends, measured
and marked them, took them home to cut and weld. I then drove down to Worthing and picked the manifold up. IIRC it cost around £250, and is as good
as any I've seen, and better than most. I don't have the number on me at the moment, but I did pass it on to Donut. If you give him a
call, he should have it. Failing that, U2U me and I'll get hold of it for you. There is a guy E.Grinstead/Forest Row way who makes prop shafts
as well.
HTH, Ian.

Ian,
thanks very much for the information on the exhaust guy in Worthing; he may be a better bet. Was the £250 for the full exhaust or just for the
manifold? If you or Donut can let me have the guy's name/contact number that would be great.
I picked up the kit today; bloody van I hired got a puncture, which I noticed as I arrived at MK, not flat but hissing away. They were great and got
one of their lads to change it for me! Anyway, I managed to get everything back to my cleared out garage without incident and can't wait to get
started tomorrow. I guess the floor is the first step but is it worth drilling holes in the inside of the lower tunnel members for the P clips for
the brake pipe, fuel pipe and wiring loom before fitting the floor? any other tip on what to do and not to do much appreciated. I shall be looking
at the various build websites and my back copies of Which Kit? magazine for tips but any gems of advice gladly received.
regards
Pete

hi mate
dont worry about drilling the holes for brakes yet nothing will get in the way
1. turn car upside down It is quite heavy have you got two workmates put a wheel flat on the back workmate this goes on the prop tunnel(when Upside
down)
2. rest floor on top and line up then get some of the plastic crocodile clips to help hold on the floor whilst you work..
drill a hole in each corner and put something through Ie a small bolt to help reline at a later date..
get underneath and mark Off with pencil the whole inside chassis remember to aim the pencil inwards
then take floor off turn over rest on piece of wood and mark in the middle every 5-6 inches around and drill with a 3mm then 5mm drill..
then turn over and put back on chassis line up with the pilot holes in the corner you drilled at the start..
Then go straight through each hole into the chassis with the 3mm and 5mm drill.
(control the drill)
put some grease on each hole as to keep away future rust..
Then pop rivet each hole your arms will become huge
and hey presto it will be done
U2U me Ive recently done everything and took pics if you want me to email you any pics
remember to put the floor back on the same way it was on in the first place when you marked it
ta chris
But believe me do this first

Personally, I wouldn't use any grease on the holes before putting the floor on. Instead, use a bead of pu adhesive either side of the holes and
bond the floor on. This will also make it water-tight.
Oh yeah, and fit the brake-line first if you intend running the main front to rear on the bottom chassis rail.
September 28th & 29th I believe in our Build Diary. (Not that its a long job - we just started late in the evening)

Oh yeah as hellfire has stated dont forget to take your floor pan off(again) after you have drilled the floor and chassis to put your line of sealent
everywhere I forgot to mention that
although I also put just a smear of grease aswell on the holes wont hurt anything

Sorry I've just seen this, but if you are still looking for an exhaust supplier, I used Powerspeed near Ashford in Kent - they did a great job
of customer building a pipe to join my manifold to the silencer

Humbug,
thanks very much; I'll give them a call as soon as I've got the engine in the car. All I've got to do now is figure out how to get
the chassis to them ...
