r1 engine query
just sorting out my engine before it goes in on the weekend
check list
1. obviously service when time comes
2. top up 250ml oil
3. .... what shall I do about the clutch springs?
shall I get that complete 100 pound kit or is it just extra springs I need which cost about a tenner??

You can just fit an extra clutch spring to make it a bit stiffer and to stop all traces of clutch slip. The diaphram spring is a bit non linear in
its operation so that it isn't to hard on a bike to hold it fully off using just your hand.
I have a barnett clutch spring conversion. IT has 6 coil springs and is more linear over it operation. It is said to give more feel when operating
with the foot.
Either is probably OK and is more a matter of opinion which is best.
you will need a new clutch cover gasket if you remove the cover. Yamaha dealers can take upto a week to get one.
Do as much as you can to the engine before fitting it in your car. It is much easer to get to things without the bodywork in the way.

Just add another spring, about 18 quid plus VAT from Yamaha.
Are you using a baffle plate ? Most R1 owners fit them and then overfill.

Oil Level
The best way to judge the oil level in an R1 is at engine idle. When idling the level in the sight galss should be at the max level indicator (roughly
3/4 way up the sight glass). This equates to around 250mL overfill (compared with the Yamaha recommendations for the bike). Anywhere between halfway
and right to the top of the sightglass will be OK. When the engine is switched off the oil will be above the sightglass. Check regularly as the R1
does like a drink when pushed hard.
This assumes that you engine is on level ground a roughly at the same angle as in the bike.
