Mk Indy s2000 New Build

Hi Guys

Well the new project is starting and is going to have this engine in
s2000 engine
s2000 engine

Started to strip the engine down and then can start to paint up etc, its a low miles 49k engine ap1 so some small mods to do on the oil system parts etc,

Stripped the engine of all the parts not required ie

Water pump (going Electric)
Alternator and adjuster (going small denso 40 amp)

Total weight saving on this lot 13 kg cant believe the weight saving,

So then weighed the engine, as is full of oil and without manifold,

I was surprised its 119 kg, i thought it would have been more so very happy with that,

I know the gearbox is 48 kg with oil as weighed that too, and the diff with oil is 30 kg,

goal is to try to come in around or if poss under 550 kg,

Cant wait to get going and spent 4 hours already today cleaning the engine will hope to try and update as we go along where time permits,

Cheers all

Very nice! Always fancied that engine for obvious reasons (IE bhp). Weirdest thing though I saw recently though was my neighbour having to do a 3-point turn in their s2000. Car seemed to work fine going forwards but seemed to have massive clutch slip going in reverse. She was revving the nuts off it and creeping backwards slower than I could push it. No engineering sympathy for her car obviously. But then once the job was done, into first and away she shot.

Very bizarre. Couldn't think why the gear selection would impact on the clutch. Equally can't think what else would cause 5000 rpm and crawling backwards. Perhaps just a slipping clutch and the lower ration of reverse made it obvious whereas the higher ratios forward covered up for it? Didn't seem to suffer any slip at all going forward though....

Yeah I lent MK a gearbox so they could do the mounts.

They have been working on my RRR SR2000 and done a good job (picking it up next week).

Your goal of 550kg - is that with or without a full cage?

Either way 550kg is gonna be a tough ask.
I built mine pretty light, and was over 600kg

In all fairness you were using a different chassis.

My mates MK Indy RR came in at 590kg with a Zetec in it. Full cage too.

Admittedly that was with a type 9.

I think 570 is doable.

Dressed with what?
A Zetec has an iron block for a kick off.
119 for a fully dressed engine is pretty good. That's Duratec realms of weight.

I'm not home to get exact figures but I've personally had both engines on accurate scales.

The S2000 motor was 145 - 147kg from memory
The zetec with everything to run it, twin carbs, clutch ect was 123 or there abouts

Granted you'll shed a little with light flywheel and ditching aircon pump

Hi guys will update soon,

But i am ambitious on the weight i know, but if of you don't set goals you will never get there

Engine i weighed and was 120 kg just over, on very reliable scales and that was full of oil,

gear box 47 kg, so yeah i know its not light but im banking on some other details to make it very lights, uprights wheels, and body work will be much lighter than standard items,

Still it may go over but we will give it a good go

Also i recently weighed a mk indy rr on corner weight scales with s2000 stock engine etc, came in at 580 kg with full cage

happy days, thats with full lights etc aswell, road spec car,

Ill have an update soon,

I think 550kg is do able Sean, especially if the aim from the start is lightness.
Did the engine you weighed have the clutch and flywheel fitted as the standard pair is about 13kg and might explain the difference.

yes had std clutch and fly wheel fitted, removed water pump and alternator, thats 13.6 kg,

new fly wheel is only 2.6 kg,

new alternator is only 2.7 kg, s2000 one is 5.7 kg so 3kg there alone

will be adding these parts to the engine though nice dry sump pan and pump tripler scavenge and the light flywheel
s2000 parts
s2000 parts

God knows where the difference is. Mine was straight out a car and dropping onto scales.

Anyway. It doesn't matter.. good luck and I hope you make 550kg or less.
That flywheel is bloody light. I used a competition clutch flywheel in mine and that was 4.2kg.

they are a torsen diff so like a lsd but not,

its a worm gear type, ratio is 4.1

see video here for how they work

What size wheels/tyres are you planning on running?

Presume 4.1 will be ok for track work,as a few people that have built Mega S2000 Westfields are saying they are too low geared for road use using 3.62 Sierra diffs, first gear is apparently redundant, and they are revving to high at cruising speeds.

track car only,

with 13" wheels 215/55 tyres allround,

gearing then is theoritical,

1st 38 mph
2nd 59 mph
3rd 82 mph
4th 103 mph
5th 123 mph
6th 148 mph

you dont really use 1st on the track so not really bothered by the low ration, and you could always pull away in 2nd

The engine is designed to be rev happy all the time, if you want a road cruiser in my opinion v8 or put a diesel engine in if you want low rpm

From my expereince I can't see that at all. I'm running a 3.62 diff with mine and am in the process of changing to 4.1. On the road only the 1st 4 gears are usable (6th almost an overdrive), with 4th taking me well over 100 mph. On roundabouts and stuff if you want to have a play and get the arse end out 2nd gear is too long and out of the sweet spot of the engine. From memory cruising at 70 mph is under 3000 rpm in 6th gear - I'm running 15 inch wheeels BTW.
On atrack day at Llandow I never used 5th (ok quite a short circuit) but you get the idea.

Not been on here for a loooong time - and its great to see someone actually building an MK Indy with an S2000 engine/gearbox

I can remember a good few years ago carrying a papermache s2000 gearbox round one of the kit car shows (think it was Stoneleigh) to see which '7' chassis it would fit into without gross butchering of the chassis after w/field had pissed me off after they refused to help me work out how to fit it into a modified seight chassis - strange how they now produce a chassis for it

The MK was the only one that looked like a good possibility, and the guys on the stand spent a lot of time talking things through with me
