I have used one from a Citroen 2CV which is nice and small but you need a seperate regulator and you don't get a light on the dash that tells you if it's not working cos the 2CV didn't have one. Most have i think used dihatsu and mitsibushi alts and bedford rascle seems popular too.

cairb said it needs to be the right polarity, does that just mean it roates the same way? and are the amperages written on most of them. If so i will just go down the local scrappy and have a nose around.

Greggors,

I used a Daihatsu Charade alternator. It fits and I believe others have used the same on. In fact I suspect that most of the Jap carbs are the same.

Not sure if mine works yet though:-)

I don't think you'll find any positive earth vehicles unless you go back to the sixties and find something with a dynamo (pre alternator fitment). I'm not sure what would happen if you run one the wrong way but if you are using a normal engine that should not happen anyway.

Just be careful if you pick one from a Honda. Some of their engines definitely aren't "mormal", they rotate the "wrong" way.
Does anyone know how those Hondas' alternators are driven? I presume they must rotate the "wrong" way too.

It would not matter which way the alternator rotates as the armature generates ac whch is rectified and regulated by the regulator, so output polarity will still be correct, the only problem may be the pulley securing nut may come loose, but easily rectifed with a little loctite.
