i'm gonna take a wild stab at a pinto as it says in his profile at the left of his post.
as for capacity, i don't know. i fill it to the line on the dipstick. it's probably a bit less than 4 litres though from very approximate

If you have the version with the wing on the side to make up the lost capacity from the chop i would go with the manual, when my pinto was in with a sump altered by martin keenam i ran 3.75L from empty.

Ah, mine does not have the wings so i am presuming i need to reduce the amount going into the sump, is there any proven technique in finding out how much oil to put in or is it simply a task of trial and error
go with the dipstick. the max is max for a reason and the min is min for a reason.
you just need to check it more religiously as there will be less capacity betwen max and min.

I'm taking the assumption that the dipstick measures somewhere around the bottom of the crank.
Isn't the oil supposed not catch on the con rods or something to stop it being foamed up?
If it is so then I would guess that a standard dipstick measurement should be correct, but hopefully someone knows for sure.

As mentioned re the dipstick. I doubt they will have chopped enough of the dipstick to eliminate the MAX marking. In wich case you still fill to the
MAX mark as origanly done by Ford. As this will give the oil a level that will be safe to run with sufficient clearance to the crank.
IE you are effectively measuring from the crank to your oil level rather than the base of the sump to your oil level if that makes sense.
