Oh good god.....BIG CAN OF WORMS!

nib1980 - 6/5/08 at 06:06 PM

zetec or a xflow, both cheap and easy to get hold of, and fairly easy to service and tune.

but someone will come along in a miunte and say put a bike engine in it, it's a normal debate, and expect a long thread.

good luck building

worX - 6/5/08 at 06:15 PM

Put a bike engine in it so you can do 0 - 60 times in single figure numbers...

ZX10R for sure i recon.

eznfrank - 6/5/08 at 06:20 PM

Another vote for bike engine from me. It may depend on your budget to a large extent but either way you're probably gonna need to decide fairly sharpish as no doubt MK will need to know what mounts to make your chassis. Mine was ready only 3 weeks from ordering!!

Hellfire - 6/5/08 at 06:24 PM

Stick a bike engine in it. Doesn't really matter which one. Any 900cc engine upwards will put a smile on yer face and give you the performance you want for trackdays and the odd hill climb.

TOO BADD - 6/5/08 at 06:35 PM

A fully sorted XE. Torque is power, something you won't get from a bike engine just a load of vibration.

eznfrank - 6/5/08 at 06:35 PM

I didn't think it would be long before ^^^ turned up You aint gonna sell him on the benefits of the zx12 then??

roadrunner - 6/5/08 at 06:43 PM

For track and hill climb events you cant beat BEC, buzzzzz buzzzzz.

P.S. welcome to the site.
Brad.

If youre looking for around £1000 to £1500 for an engine go bike,

To get that sort of power from a car engine will cost alot more,

Plus if it does die on you its not a lot of money to replace it,

And you get a sequencial gearbox for free lots of money on a car engine????

Good luck

eccsmk - 6/5/08 at 06:55 PM

i would have to say get a bike engine
oh and then a nice avatar to go with it

whitestu - 6/5/08 at 07:02 PM

For the usage you are suggesting get a bike engine.

Stu

How much money have you got to spend ? That's the big question.

If you've got a spare few quid:

SBD Duratec

Elite 6 Speed Sequential

That should keep those pesky 'busa's at bay

fesycresy - 6/5/08 at 07:09 PM

And now for the serious answer, carb'ed R1 for simplicity or later injected R1 for a few more BHP and a few wires more.

Give Malc a shout at Yorkshire Engines he'll sort you out.

If you're worried about the wiring, contact Chris Mason on the forum, a bit of an R1 wiring guru.

Is'nt it time this stupid question got a sticky, I'm fed up of wasting my download limit on it?
And if it was any other forum they'd have given the asker a bum rush to the FAQ with a flea in his ear

Volvorsport - 6/5/08 at 07:37 PM

i suggest if your hillclimbing it , youll be in the ultra competitive bike engine class against , 'ultra competitive bike engined cars' !

just a thought .

coozer - 6/5/08 at 07:49 PM

LISTEN!! ROVER T16 Easy 250bhp for less than £300 Woosh - Psst!!!

Or a bike engine, up to you. Easier to drive in a furious go up a hill or round a fast track.

BUT, if your rich how about a Cosworth turbo and 4wd?? Power and grip that BEC's can only dream about.

Thats it, off to hide and avoid the cans flying my way

Steve

D Beddows - 6/5/08 at 08:05 PM

And you don't want a turbo or a supercharger if you're going hillclimbing either as that'll more than likely put you in a different, but equally big money, 'ultra competitive' class

Hellfire - 6/5/08 at 08:16 PM

ZZR1400

coozer - 6/5/08 at 09:07 PM

BHP per ££?? Becs just cannot compete on these

Whoosh - Psst!!

Mole - 6/5/08 at 09:39 PM

£180 thats tempting

eccsmk - 6/5/08 at 09:44 PM

TRY HERE

ReMan - 6/5/08 at 10:03 PM

And never touch paint with a "Wet Paint" sign on it, just to check

mangogrooveworkshop - 6/5/08 at 10:21 PM

Put an ELECTRIC motor in it very fast

Simon - 6/5/08 at 11:59 PM

Be different, put a diesel in. Gordon Brown will love you forever, for saving the planet.

I'd use a twin turbo Rover V8. Planet's quite capable of looking after itself

Ahhm...

There are normally 3 (occasionally 4) classes that suit 'our' cars, assuming it's still going to be road legal.

"Specialist production road modified":-
Up to 1700cc - normally excludes bike
engines - but not always.

Over 1700cc > to anything you like..

Occasionally a sub class just for bike engined cars.

And Sports Libre.
(where the bike engined cars normally end up.)

So if you're thinking of going for a bike engine, check what classes are run locally to you before making your mind up.
For example if Bike engines end up in sport libre only then you'll end up against Radicals and the like instead of the 'locaterfields' (as we're known!) this isn't a problem and you'll still have a great day out - just not competitivly.

If the up to 1700 class allows bike engines you're laughing.

If it doesn't:-

I would personally recommend sticking to the 'up to 1700' class either way as the over 1700 lads have lots and lots of power and the smaller engines are plenty quick enough, engine choice seems to be:-

1.6 Rover K series
1.7 Ford Sigma(?) (the baby zetec out of a Puma)
1.6 Ford Duratec
Toyota 4a-ge (16 or 20v)

They're the simple, easy to install and known to be competitive ones that come to mind.

I can't help myself... so sorry, but it made me smile. One for Hellfire per chance?

Clicky link

On a more serious note - I would go with the CEC suggestion. Get to grips with the performance, tweak that a bit and then see how you feel when you are always blown away by the BECs on your track days.

Sorry - getting my coat...
