Diff maintenance
paulmw - 25/4/07 at 09:55 AM

I picked up a sierra LSD diff (including drive shafts).

Apart from a good clean and paint do I need to do anything else to it. e.g change the oil etc

Also what do I paint it with?

hammer ite is fine there is better but cant remember the name

diff oil is designed for life however I emptied mine and put fresh in sure it was hypoid gear oil

try a search

I wouldnt bother doing all this as it cant be seen when its on the car

all it does is make an absolute mess everywhere

have the Driveshafts got ABS teeth on the end its like a ring of fine teeth

if so these need machining off just down to the bottom of the tooth

they wont fit your rear uprights

The guys at MK weren't sure if the teeth needed grining off for the new chassis?

Make sure that you put LSD oil in not just normal diff oil - LSD plates will chop the oil which will then overheat and you'll knacker something (eventually)

Does that apply to a Sierra diff?

Hypoid gear oil, viscosity SAE 90 to API GL5

thats what went in mine and never missed a beat from my permanent 12k revs

When you take the drain plug out from the diff, if I recall correctly it has a magnetic filter to chatch metal swaf, you will find its full, of bits, clean it with a rag before re-filling the diff..

The sierra diff uses a viscous coupling which has its own oil and is a sealed unit within the diff. Ordinary diff oil will be fine.
