I have an MK exhaust manifold for a fireblade engine as per pic.
Does this look good for a start point of cutting out the hole in the body?
I reckon the center is 6" down from top of side panel.

when cutting a hole in my body work, first I drilled a small hole in line with one of the middle cylinders (in line with the angle of the exhaust). I pushed a piece of round bar through the hole to the exhaust holes on the cylinder head to make sure I had the angle just right.

I had got the hole just a but high and was able to move it down a bit.

If your side panel is not fixed on yet, I'd make a carboard copy wide enough to put the hole in, and play with that first.... Then use this as a template to mark out the hole on the panel, saves making a mistake...

Dont know if this is practical for you boys. To cut mine, I took the panel off. Fitted the exhaust and taped masking tape to the frame around the exhaust. Then remove the exhaust and refit the side panel. Use the masking tape as a template for the hole and robert's your father's brother.

Oh, did I not mention that the side panel is fixed on.

i made a mock up out of a cereal box marked on the side panel with a white board marker. drilled an 8mm hole then cut it out with a dremmel type tool.sanded it out a bit, was really easy to cut just be careful you don't slip, could be an expensive mistake! kev

I made a cardboard cutout today for the exhaust which is how I'm going to approach this...... fortunatelly before I made any cuts I discovered that my engine is 2inches too low.
I will therfore need to make new engine mounts asap.

Worth checking before you cut your holes.
