Zetec oil filter and steering link
L5W - 24/2/10 at 07:15 PM

Hi,

I've got an issue with the oil filter on an early 2.0L zetec from a mondeo and the steering column link.

I've been doing some searching on here and can see that Coozer got round this with a remote filter but looking at the clearance on mine, I don't think there is enough room.

Other searches mention adding a new support, a rose joint and a second u/j link. If anyone has some pictures of how they've done theirs that would be great!

Thanks,

Lee

I had the same problem

I moved my steering rack over so that steering connect other side of the chassis leg

There are two differant oil pumps. The second may give clearance for a remote filter.

Thanks for the replies, i didn't know there were two types of oil pumps for the zetec, will look into it

Faced the same issues in mine
Went with a shorter pump (1.8 Fiesta /Escort item) and remote filter plumbed in

i put an extra UJ in the shaft and used a renault 5 turdo oil filter, they are thinner than a thin thing on a diet

Yup, i had the same issue on my indy.
I modified my shaft with a support bearing and an extra u/j.
I have enough room to fit a full size mondeo filter in now.

done 2 zetecs now on with the third I weldet another tubue between the botom chasis rail and the round diagonal, mountes a bracket onto it. Cut the steering shaft and welded in another uJ some pics in my archive of the first install we used a suspension bush to carry the shaft, 4 year on and no significant wear

the car was an MK

Take care if you go this way- Renault 5 is not the correct thread. It fits, but it's not on right and couple of people have had major leaks.

Hopefully someone who knows more will post as I can't remember the correct filter.

Cheers,
James

Tilt the engine slightly down and to the left and the filter will fit just under, that said I did make my own mounts. No problems after 8000 miles. Rescued attachment DSCF0029.JPG

Yup as zetec pushed the engine over a few mm's and a very slight tilt was enough to fit the smaller oil filter.

The renault 5 turbo filter is not the exact thread size BUT and its a big BUT, you do not have to tighten oil filters by hand until your fingers bleed.
Have used the renault filters for the last 3 years with no problems at all. Rescued attachment parts0742.JPG

Hi,

I mocked up the mod I'm planning to do to the steering link to clear the oil filter. A few photos below.

Can anyone can spot anything that might cause a problem before i got ahead and tidy the box section post and then weld it onto the chassis plate?

Thanks,

Lee

Hi, not wanting to compromise on oil filter capacity (trying to keep it OEM and because of the thinner oil zetecs use) I manipulated the engine around a bit when I was making mounts to give me enough clearance for a remote and full size filter.

Lotusmadandys and Austin Mans solution was very neat and can easily be achieved.
