Electrical problem??
midge - 21/9/09 at 01:15 PM

Driving at the weekend my indicators started playing up and I noticed a plum of smoke coming from under the top steering column shroud. Further investigation revealed it was coming from inside the indicator / main beam switch. The internal circuit board has partially burnt!! I can't think why this could off occured, its an old Sierra switch but I'm worried there may well be a problem elsewhere in the loom. Does anyone know if these switches are prone to failure? I've just got another from the scrappy and don't want to fit until I've investigated further.

Cheers Steve

How long has it been working ok for?
If it has been working for a long time, then it might just be the switch

On the road a fortnight, but no issues during build and SVA.

Could just be old contacts burning out. If it was a short the fuses should have blown (assuming you've fused it all properly)...

Check your lampholders for shorts and places where the loom might rub or pass hot stuff as well

^^^^^^ Agree with Ben. Fuses should protect against short, suspect dampness / old contacts. You can always measure what current is being drawn from the battery when you connect up new switch.

Thanks, I'll have a check over as much of the loom as I can tonight.
