I really want a quick rack.
Can anyone list an almost step by step guide and links to exact items I need to achive this?
I rung MK who said they can convert my rack to a 2.8 for £120, but I also see kits for a lot less that this.
I am also concerned that I perhaps would need to shorted/modify the rack to fit the indy as I understand MK do this on an exchange basis with your
donor item when building the kit.

Move your arms faster??
Not very helpful, but much cheaper!
I think the kits you've seen include a new rack and pinion that you have to fit to your existing rack. In which case you'd need to shorten the rack part to suit the MK modified (narrowed) Sierra housing - someone on here mentioned doing this themselves in a lathe recently).
Buy a QR kit from the likes of Rally Design. This includes both a new rack and pinion.
Remove rack gaiters and unscrew inner balljoints to disconnect track rods.
Remove rack from car.
Undo plastic plug securing input pinion on rack (it unscrews).
Remove pinion and then slide rack out of rack casing.
Measure old rack against new one and cut new one to length using grinder, hacksaw, or lathe if you have one.
Drill and re-tap cut end of new rack to suit inner balljoint. It's a strange thread, either M12 or M14 fine I believe but there is more than one
pitch of fine thread at this size. I can look at the tap I bought and let you know if necessary.
Now just put it all back together using the new rack and pinion. Don't do the plastic retaining plug up too tight else you will make the rack
stiff.
Unless you got the lenght exactly the same, you will need to check your tracking.
Hope this helps...

As Matt says but here's a drawing to show the components. If you have the tools to shorten it and tap the thread, then it's easy enough to
do yourself.

smaller steering wheel
Smaller steering wheel won't make any difference. If the rack is 4 turns from lock to lock, it doesn't matter if the steering wheel is 8
inch or 18 inch, it's still 4 turns......... isn't it?

In theory a smaller the rim of a smaller steering wheel wouldnt have to travel as far lock to lock. Of course as said it would be heavier.
Anyone know how much a Sierra QR kit is? Can only see escort ones on the Ral Des website.

You may be able to use a "steering quickener" which is just another gear box that goes on the steering shaft. Can get them for around
$100usd or so.
Cheers.
