I now have my donor, a BMW 530, and the V8 engine is appox 28" wide at the widest point across the heads. I won't be able to make accurate
measurements till i get it free of the car.
I'd like to just build a mcsorley +4 chassis if I can make it all fit.
I think it should fit. I am still planning to fit a jag V12 in mine which is 27" wide. I have built the engine bay 6" wider at the nose and
6" longer but you have 2 cylinders less which would probably make up the extra 6 inches.

Just measured my top rails at centre (highest point of plenum) of engine and chassis is 32.5" wide (approx). It's a plus 4" chassis.
There is slightly more clearance lower down. Have a look at your exhaust manifold and see how tight they are to the block. They may be a deffo
remake.

Thanks for measuring Simon. The manifolds are pretty much tight up against the block BU the heads are wider than the Rover as they are DOHC. See the
pic below of a removed engine.
A +4 chassis might do then, I'm just worried that i'll build it only to find the engine won't fit.

I had a measure up of the chassis - with ruler immediately in front of the rocker covers on my engine and the chassis was 28.5 inches at that point,
so assuming the BMW unit isn't much (read not very) longer and you can get the front of the BMW engine in the same relative place, you'll
have 1/4" a side spare. That's assuming there's no ancilliaries that could foul.
You will probably be better off either going straight for a +6" wide chassis, or waiting till you've removed your engine and can hang it
over the build board.

Hmm, I have measured the rocker covers and they are 30.5" long.
Having read my other thread about making a wider nosecone, I think I'll take your advice and go for a plus 6" chassis. That way I can be
sure the engine is going to fit, I'll have room for my feet next to the gearbox etc.
