im new to the site and just starting my build....
Does anybody know the limit of the sierra 20L xr4x4 rear LSD axle etc....
ive located one of these for my prodject, but befor i go ahead & get it i would like to know if it will up to the job in respect of the planned
power output.... i have a revision 2, 3sgte engine (import mr2 tubo) which when installed & all finished will produce around 285 - 300BHP.........
WILL THE REAR AXLE THAT IVE FOUND BE UP TO THE TASK ???

Hi mate - that's some serious horsepower in a car that will weigh circa 600kg.
Caterham do a 270hp (IIRC) Duratec 2.3 - so it is possible to get that kind of reliable power.
It should cope with it ok - but if not, try and get the bigger 7.5" Cossie diff - these can hold 350+bhp - or purchase a Quaife one
I'd definitely invest in some serious brakes - and are you building the chassis yourself or purchasing a ready made one?

i have the book & very good engineer as my buddy... he is charged with all fabrication and i will take care of all the running gear etc.
we have the chassis material all cut to size & spec. once it is built extra strength will be built in.
i was quite lucky to get the engine it was not my first choice but it came up so i grabbed it, will not be using the toyota turbo but a supercharger
instead, with emerald managment. have a complete set of throttle bodies from a 20v 4age (from ebay) i hope we can make it all fit !!!

I'd try and get the 7.5" cossie diff thinking about it more - I believe the cossie drive shafts are also stronger.
Have you sorted the ratios out yet though? As it might be worthwhile getting a Quaife diff with a custom ratio? I think Quaife diffs are £800 - but
you'll only need to buy it once - so pretty cheap in the long run.
Final drive is pretty important - so might be worth searching around for a gear calculator and determining what you need.
Or pose the question here - some very knowledgable people on here.

I'd have thought a locost is too light and lacking in traction to bother a 7" LSD, even with 300bhp. This is the same diff and shafts (with
a different ratio) fitted to all 4x4 sierra cossies and the escort cossie too, and i dont think they worry about uprating them until real serious
power (400+), and that's in a car twice as heavy.
I'm using the same running gear in my car and that will eventually have around 300bhp too.

Out of interest what gearbox are you using with the 3SGTE?
its torque that breaks things not horsepower and with such a lightweight you wont be able to load the transmission enough to damage the diff , 350hp 400lb ft seems to be about the limit for the 7" in a 1000kg car
I put a 7" lsd cosworth in mine. I've got a 350-400 hp chevy v8. Its the torque that kills the diff. Mine gets about 380 lb/ft.
To protect the diff you will probably want the rear wheels to spin up than clonk the diff. Remember to get genuine ford lsd oil.
I paid £250 for mine remanufactured by abbey transmissions in london.
Don't forget the uprated gearbox and clutch !
