Anyone any tips on mounting/making a bracket for the top part of the Sierra column to mount it to the chassis and how to work out how high and how far
from the pedals?
Also, don't know whether to have the traingular end of the column going under the chassis bar (near the pedals) and through the footwell end
(like MK) or whether to go over the chassis bar like Stuart Taylor.
Anyone any tips/experience?
Thanks,
Pat...
I made judged column position by what felt right when sat in the car (fixed seats in first).
I went for column over chassis rails because it fouled my feet (size 10.5) with boots it it went under. The angle also seems more nartural to me.
I postioned the column where it wanted to be and then made the brakets to fit it.
The Brakets are made from 3mm plate and 50*50*3mm angle iron trimend and shaped to fit. The braket for the bearing has a 3mm thick ring welded to the
other side so the sierra bush is a better fit.
The 2 over long bars will be shorted and then weled in place to support the main braket so when some fool pulls up/down on the steering wheel it
shound not twist the chassis rails.
Its currently a work in progress, waiting to be fully welded.

mine is not book, but VERY similar to mr barclays
If you go too high you run into the space problem for the altenator on a CEC
its alright, it's bec, though i don't know what it will foul on with the blade engine in.
mk put all their columns through the top of the footwell, like mine, regardless of engine.
looks neater imho, especially with floor mounted pedals, as it takes all the bulk out of the firewall, and just looks smoother.

the column on my MNR goes over the chassis. It makes the wheel almost vertical but does free up the foot well.
When fitting mine, I but in the drivers seat and adjusted it to suit the fixed pedals (brake and clutch). I set the steering wheel and acccelerator
pedal to where they felt comfortable. You could cable tie the column in place to see if it's right.

One of the problems is the top mount - I have nothing to cable tie it to yet.
Got to work out how far back the top mount goes from the bottom one - but I guess once I have the bottom one sorted, the top one will be easier.
Tom, when can I be nosey at your car again and take some measurements?
Cheers,
Pat...
