Chassis update and question?
Avoneer - 17/4/05 at 09:10 PM

Hi,
Chassis coming along nicely and Stuart Taylor engine cradle brackets all in place and tacked up.
Does anyone think the "R" bar will be a problem being 1" inboard of where it should be?
Bearing in mind that the engine cradle offers much additional bracing across the engine bay.
Cheers,
Pat... Rescued attachment CHassis.JPG

The 'Readers Digest' engineers will say its all wrong, but fully welded, I doubt you will get any problems. If you are worried, weld a support ahead of the round section to give an uninterupted load path to the chassis perimeter.

Cheers Mark.
I thought that when it was all welded, it would be fine.
I could always insert a small 3mm plate gusset in-between the round, the top chassis rail on the left and "R"???

Wouldnt worry Pat the chassis looks great against some ive seen on my travels. Theres one that has enough space behind the seats to store golf clubs. A small plate will tidy that up...

I wonder what car that would be....

Would it be zetec powered and have rear wheel arches shaped like 50p pieces ?

Look at this way you have a 1" offset but room to get the welder nozzle in to do a decent weld. A spaceframe is just a whole load of comprimises welded together. :-)

i wouldn't worry, think mine is slightly like this. if that worried as said a gusset of 3mm plate should be well sufficicent reinforcement/would be my line of action.

Ned.

Will gusset then - being a lightweight BEC though, I'll drill some holes in it!

Made a gusset and then decided this would be better (the small round bar is at right angles to the engine cradle mount).
This should be ok shouldn't it??? Rescued attachment Gusset.JPG

The addition of a tiny gusset would make it spot on Rescued attachment Gusset.JPG

Ah.....
Mark - you are the font of all knowledge for stuff like this - thanks.
Will stick a small gusset where indicated.
I got a bit confused, was gonna put the gusset in the triangle between the small round bar I added, the top outside chassis bar and the top chassis bar that has the engine cradle mounts on it.
All makes sense now.
Cheers,
